CCU Splits at Winthrop Invitational ROCK HILL, S.C. — After falling to St. John's 3-2, Coastal Carolina's softball team returned to Eagle Field to defeat Morehead State ?-? on the opening day of the 2002 Winthrop Invitational. The Lady Chanticleers will continue play in the Winthriop tourney on Saturday with a 1:00 p.m. game against Morgan State and a 5:00 p.m. contest against Mercer.
Trailing 1-0 entering the bottom of the first inning, Coastal's Karlye Fortune singled through the right side of the infield to score a pair and give the Lady Chanticleers a 2-1 advantage over St. John's. The Red Storm tied the game in the next inning with a sacrifice fly and then scored the winner in the fifth inning on a RBI double by Jillian Sandoval.
Meghan Allman (5-11) earned the complete game victory for St. John's, allowing five hits and three walks while striking out eight. Lauren Yates (2-1) took her first loss of the season after allowing five hits and two walks while striking out four.
Alesha Argeras and Sandoval each went 2-for-3 to lead St. John's, while Fortune's 2-for-3 performance with a pair of RBI led CCU.
In game two, Coastal's Holly Lee led the Lady Chants offensive attack with a 3-for-4 performance that included a grand slam homerun in CCU's six-run second inning. Kelli Julg also homered for Coastal, while Stephanie Belden went 2-for3 with a pair of doubles and three RBI.
Belden (3-2) also pitched the complete game victory, striking out 10 and allowing just one walk.
