Box Score Volleyball Beats Winthrop in Four Games CONWAY, S.C.– Sophomore Katherine Jensen (Vancouver, B.C./Sentinel Secondary) and senior Sarah Bennett (Eagan, Minn./Eagan) had 21 kills apiece and sophomore Jennifer Hampton (Lake Forest, Calif./El Toro) had a season-high 63 assists as the Coastal Carolina University volleyball team (14-9, 5-2 Big South) defeated defending Big South Tournament champions Winthrop University (16-9, 5-2 Big South) 3-1 Oct. 25 in Conway, S.C. Coastal fell in the first game 28-30, but won the next three by scores of 30-19, 30-23 and 30-26.
In game one,Coastal led as late as 18-17, before Winthrop went on a rally to take a 29-21 lead. With game point on the line, sophomore Krista Kimble (Lake Forest, Calif./El Toro) served seven straight points to trim the advantage to 29-28. But Mary Hock’s kill gave Winthrop the first game. Coastal hit .254 in the first game as Jensen had nine kills in game one.
Coastal used that momentum from the end of game one to take a 30-19 win in game two. The Lady Chants hit .313, compared to .122 for the Eagles. Coastal also took seven of the last eight points in the game, with freshman Laura Obert (Cincinnati, Ohio/Mother of Mercy) garnering two of those kills.
Jensen had six kills in game three as Coastal hit an amazing .400 for the 30-23 win. Coastal jumped out to a 7-2 lead and led by as many as nine in the third game. Hampton had 17 assists in the game.
Coastal added 18 kills in game four to take the match. Winthrop led as late as 15-14, but Coastal took a two-point lead at 19-17 and never lost that advantage. Jensen had five kills and Bennett added eight digs in the deciding game.
Bennett added 18 digs to secure her eighth double-double of the year. Jensen had her 17th double-double of the season as she had 13 digs to go with her 21 kills. Freshman Alicia Meyers (Temecula, Calif./Temecula Valley) was the third Lady Chants in double figures with 12 kills and 16 digs. Coastal also tied a season high in blocks with 11. Kimble led the team with five total blocks.
This was Hampton’s third career match with over 60 assists. She also was three assists shy of her career high in assists, which was established Nov. 2, 2002, against Liberty.
Hock led all players with 23 kills and added 15 digs. Winthrop libero Sarah Billingsley had 22 digs and Eagles’ setter Emily Heckl added 52 assists.
Coastal Carolina faces the University of North Carolina at Asheville Saturday, Nov. 1, at 7 p.m., at Kimbel Arena. That match also is Senior Night.
