Box Score Softball Sweeps UNC Wilmington WILMINGTON, N.C. -Coastal Carolina sweeps a doubleheader with host UNC Wilmington, Apr. 1, with the Lady Chants winning the first, 8-0, and taking the second, 2-0. The Lady Chanticleers go to 23-12, while the Seahawks are now 16-22, including the Lady Chants taking three of the four meetings this season.
In the opener, Coastal got on the board early, taking a 1-0 lead in the top of the second, as freshman Sara Hostetler’s triple to left scored senior Suzanne Kimbrell. The Lady Chants padded the lead with three runs in the top of the fifth. Senior Kimberly Josephson led off with a double to left field and senior Holly Lee moved her to third with a single to left. Senior Kelli Julg’s sacrifice fly to center scored Josephson, with Lee advancing all the way to third. Senior Morgan Tolleson got on after an error by the UNCW shortstop, as Lee scored to make it 3-0. Kimbrell then drove the ball to the right field fence for a triple and Tolleson scoring for the RBI. Coastal then put the game out of reach, scoring four runs on three hits in the top of the seventh. In total, the Lady Chants pounded out 11 hits, the second most for CCU this season. Freshman Christine Doyle picked up her fourth shutout and 12th win of the year, giving up just one hit, that coming in the bottom of the sixth, while striking out six.
Coastal again opened on top in the nightcap, as Tolleson led off the second with a double and was later driven in freshman Lynee Hastings’ first collegiate home run, into the wind, over the center field fence to put the Lady Chants up, 2-0. Coastal took advantage of a UNCW miscue in the top of the seventh to get an insurance run and lead 3-0 on senior Amanda DeGrendele’s RBI single, scoring pinch-runner Katey Allen. Freshman Brittany Nelson struck out career-best eight, including a streak of seven in a row, and had no walks in six innings of relief to go to 6-3 this season.
Coastal Carolina is back in action, Thursday, Apr. 3, at Charleston Southern in a 3 p.m. Big South Conference doubleheader.
