CONWAY, S.C. – The Coastal Carolina University softball team picked up a 4-3 victory over the Lady Pirates from East Carolina on Monday, March 12. Senior
Carla Hood (Marion, S.C./Marion) hit a three-run homerun in the win. In the second, senior
Kimberly Cillis (Magnolia, Texas/Magnolia) reached first with a walk.
Brittany Birnbaum (Chino Hills, Calif./Ayala) moved Cillis to second with a bunt beat the throw to first. Hood then brought everyone across home plate with a homer over the left field fence to give the Chants a 3-0 advantage. In the fourth, Paige Baggett and Beth Nolan both hit homeruns to bring the Lady Pirates within one at 3-2. East Carolina then evened the score at three with a RBI single from Jessica Johnson in the fifth inning.
Kristina Sheppard (Galveston, Texas/Ball) opened the sixth with a double to right center.
Laicole Walker (Wichita, Kan./Wichita Collegiate School) came in to pinch run for Sheppard.
Allison Cantrell (McDonough, Ga./Eagle’s Landing) put two runners on with a walk. Cillis then advanced all the runners with a single up the middle. Birnbaum then scored Walker with an RBI ground out to right field. Birnbaum’s RBI gave Coastal a 4-3 lead that held. Freshman
Ashley Frederick collected the win from the circle. Frederick improves to 4-7 on the season, allowed seven hits and recorded six stikeouts in the contest. Coastal and East Carolina will play a doubleheader on Tuesday, Mar. 13 with the first game starting at 1 p.m. in Conway, S.C.
