CONWAY, S.C. - The Coastal Carolina men's tennis team fell to East Carolina 6-1 Thursday afternoon at the Billy Nichols Tennis Center.
The team drops to 13-3 on the season while ECU improved to 5-8.
The Pirates won the doubles point despite Simon Taylor (Hampshire, England/Queen Mary's College) and Andy Caress (Cincinnati, Ohio/Princeton) winning at number two doubles after defeating ECU's Brian Walters and Matt Peeler, 8-5.
Plamen Tzvetkov (Herts, United Kingdom/Stanborough) and Richard Redding (Winscombe, England/Queen Elizabeth's Hospital) fell at the number one spot to the Pirate duo of Stephen Whitwall and Aleksey Kochetov, 8-3.
Joseph Withers (Peoria, Ill./Dunlap (Liberty)) filled in as senior Elliott Quibell's (Derby, England/Cheam (Colorado) partner while David Mellis (London, England/Goffs) took the day off. Withers and Quibell fell to Sam McSpadden and Bryan Oakley 8-5.
Quibell was the only Chanticleer to pick up a win against a strong Pirate team after defeating Brian Walters at number five singles 6-0, 6-2.
Tzvetkov lost to Aleksy Kochetov 6-3, 6-2 at the number one singles position while Taylor fell to Matt Peeler in a tough three-set match 7-6, 2-6, 10-6.
Redding also was defeated by ECU's Stephen Whitwall 6-0, 6-3 and Caress broke a six-match winning streak after falling to Bryan Oakley 7-6, 6-1.
Withers also dropped his match against Sam McSpadden 6-4, 6-2.
"We were simply out played by a good East Carolina squad today," head coach Chris Powers commented. "This was our worst overall performance of the spring but we aren't making excuses. If we needed a wake up call before High Point this weekend we definitely got it today."
The Chanticleers hit the courts again on Saturday, March 17 as they host Big South Conference rival High Point at Noon ET at the Billy Nichols Tennis Center.
