Box Score Softball Falls to Appalachian State and Kennesaw State More Information:
CONWAY, S.C. – The Coastal Carolina University softball team opened up a three-way doubleheader with an 8-7 extra inning loss to Appalachian State and a 3-0 loss to Kennesaw State on Saturday, Mar. 17. Appalachian State opened the game with a 2-0 lead after their first at bat. Coastal quickly tied the score with a walked in run and an RBI from
Erika Trujillo (Littleton, Colo./Dakota Ridge (Northern Colorado)) to end the first inning. The next three innings were scoreless, until the Mountaineers went on top 5-2 in the fifth. They added two more in the top of the sixth which brought the score to 7-2 before Coastal went to bat in the sixth.
Kimberly Cillis (Magnolia, Texas/Magnolia) opened the sixth inning with her third homerun of the season over the left field fence.
Kelsey Riffel (Wichita, Kan./Maize) reached first with a walk.
Carla Hood (Marion, S.C./Marion) brought Riffel home putting two runs on the board with her fifth homer of the season bringing the Chants within two at 7-5.
Allison Cantrell (McDonough, Ga./Eagle’s Landing) opened the seventh with a double to left center and then advanced to third on a wild pitch. Trujillo evened the score with a homer over the left center fence and forced the game into extra innings. The contest went to three extra inning before ASU scored off an RBI bunt in the 10
th inning to get the 8-7 victory. The Mountaineers improved to 5-16 on the season while Coastal fell to 8-19. Coastal then turned their attention to Kennesaw State. Kennesaw State took the 3-0 lead that held in the top of the first inning off two doubles one from Keri McGee and the other from Jennifer Nolan. The Lady Chants were held to only one hit. Brittney Hollifield (Rockford, Tenn./Alcoa). Hollifield threw in all seven innings and struck out nine KSU batters. With the loss, she fell to 3-4 on the season. All three teams will return to action on Sunday, Mar. 18. Coastal will take on Kennesaw State at Noon and Appalachian State at 2 p.m.
