More Information:

CONWAY, S.C. – The Coastal Carolina University softball team dropped both games in the second half of the weekend’s three-way doubleheader. Coastal first fell to Kennesaw State 5-3 then to Appalachian State 9-3.   Coastal took an early 3-0 first-inning lead over Kennesaw State with a two-run homer from junior Allison Cantrell (McDonough, Ga./Eagle’s Landing), her fourth of the season. CCU then added the third run with a walk from Alicia Irwin (Salina, Kan./Salina South) that walked in Kristina Sheppard (Galveston Texas/Ball).   Kennesaw took over the lead in the second inning. The Owls recorded five hits in the inning and went on top of CCU 4-3.     KSU’s Jennifer Nolan hit a homerun in the fifth inning to put the Owls up two for a final score of 5-3.   The Chanticleers recorded eight hits in the contest, but couldn’t make up the difference on the scoreboard leaving 11 runners on base in the game. Sheppard and Cantrell both did well at the plate going 2-for-3 and 2-for-4 respectively.   Freshman Ashley Frederick (Lusby, Md./Patuxent) threw in seven innings and recorded two stikeouts.   With the win, Kennesaw State improved to 26-10 on the season.   Against Appalachian State, Sheppard recorded two RBI’s with a single up the middle that scored both Glynn Tolleson (Tomball, Texas/Tomball (Radford)) and Danyelle Gerdts (Colorado Springs, Colo./Air Academy), putting the Chants on top 2-0 in the first inning. The 2-0 lead held for the next two innings.   The Chant’s 2-0 lead was not enough for the Mountaineers in the fourth inning when they plated seven runs off five hits and took the lead at 7-2.   CCU added one run in the bottom of the fourth when Carla Hood (Marion, S.C./Marion) hit her sixth homerun of the season over the center field fence. Hood was 2-for-3 in the game and currently leads the team in homeruns and has recorded 18 RBI’s.   ASU increased their lead to 9-3 in the sixth inning with three hits including a double to the center field fence from Kasey Motsinger.   The Chants were unable to overcome in their final two at bats and fell to 8-22 on the season with the 9-3 loss.   Coastal will hit the road on Saturday Mar. 24 heading to Charleston Southern for a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.
