More Information:

LYNCHBURG, Va. – The Coastal Carolina softball team fell to the Liberty Flames on Saturday, April 28. Four hits from the Flames in the bottom of the seventh was the difference that gave Liberty a 4-3 win over Coastal at the Liberty Softball Field.   The Lady Flames took the lead after one inning; Jessica Moore hit a home run to right center giving Liberty a 1-0 lead. They added two more in the third inning with a home run from Dawn Jeffs.   Coastal  got on the board in the top of the fourth inning as Allison Cantrell (McDonough, Ga./Eagle’s Landing) hit her 11th homer of the year, a shot to center field, cutting Liberty’s lead to two runs, 3-1.   The Chanticleers then tied the game in the top of the sixth inning as they plated two runs on three hits that brought the score to 3-3. Cantrell started the inning’s scoring by hitting her second home run of the game and 12th of the season, a solo shot to right field. With her 12 home runs she leads the team and has now recorded 30 RBIs.   Kristina Sheppard (Galveston, Texas/Ball) kept things moving for CCU when she reached first after by being struck by a pitch. Brittany Birnbaum (Chino Hills, Calif./Ayala) then put runners on first and second with a line shot to third base.   Trish Kretchman (Berrien Springs, Mich./Lakeshore) put a shot to right field driving in pinch runner Kelsey Riffel (Wichita, Kan./Maize) to tie the game.   The score remained the same until the bottom of the seventh inning when Liberty got three-consecutive singles to load the bases. Hensley ended the game with a hit just over first base, scoring Jessica Leary and securing the 4-3 victory for Liberty.   Ashley Frederick (Lusby, Md./Patuxent) suffered the loss in relief of Kretchman as Frederick allowed the game-winning run on five hits over three-plus innings of work. Kretchman started the contest and allowed three runs on four hits.   Cantrell was the offensive star for the Chants as she was 2-for-4 with two solo home runs, followed by Danyelle Gerdts (Colorado Springs, Colo./Air Academy) going 2-for-4 from the plate as well.   The loss drops Coastal Carolina to 20-32 on the year and 7-8 in Big South action. With the win, the Lady Flames raise their record to 34-21 on the year and 9-3 in league play.   Today’s game brought to a close the CCU regular season as they won’t return to the softball diamond until May 10-12 when they host the 2007 Big South Softball Championship in Conway, S.C.
