More Information:

RADFORD, Va. – The Coastal Carolina University softball team split two games with Radford University on Friday, Apr. 6. In very chilly conditions Coastal dropped the first 7-0, but won the second 7-5 with six homeruns. Glynn Tolleson hit three homers and Allison Cantrell finished with two in the victory.   The Highlanders (30-17, 4-1 BSC) came on strong in the first game putting six runs on the board in their first at bat. Highlander pitcher Ashley Taylor recorded 16 total strikeouts with eight of them in a row.   The Chants (15-23, 4-1 BSC) recorded four hits in the contest. The first came from Glynn Tolleson (Tomball, Texas/Tomball (Radford)) and the second from Kristina Sheppard (Galveston, Texas/Ball) both hit ground balls through the left side in the fourth inning. In the fifth, Alicia Irwin (Salina, Kan./Salina South) singled up the middle. Kimberly Cillis (Magnolia, Texas/Magnolia) put a shot past shortstop for the final Coastal hit in the seventh.   Taking the loss in the circle for Coastal was Ashley Frederick (Lusby, Md./Patuxent). Frederick fell to 7-10 on the season, allowed only three earned runs on six hits, two strikeouts and one walk.   In game two, Coastal took a 1-0 lead when Tolleson led off with a homerun to the left. Radford then tied it in the bottom of the inning when Cassie Rhodes scored on a bunt.   Radford scored a pair of runs in the second off a costly CCU error. Allison Cantrell (McDonough, Ga./Eagle’s Landing) cut the lead to 3-2 with a shot over the center field fence in the third.   In the fifth, Coastal regained the lead when Tolleson and Sheppard hit a pair of solo homeruns that brought the score to 4-3.   Coastal added three insurance runs to the board in the top of the seventh. Tolleson and Cantrell hit back-to-back homers to open the inning. Alyssa Tornatore (Frederick, Md/Tuscarora) pinch ran for Sheppard and stole home on a wild pitch giving Coastal a four-run lead at 7-3.   Radford put two on the board in the bottom of the seventh, but Frederick caught Alex Roderick swinging to seal the victory for CCU.   Tolleson and Cantrell combined to go 6-for-8 with five total homeruns, five RBI, and five runs. Danyelle Gerdts (Colorado Springs, Colo./Air Academy) picked up the win, throwing in just over five innings allowing only one earned run and struck out three. Trish Kretchman (Berrien Springs, Mich./Lakeshore) went 1.1 innings and struck out one and allowed only one earned run. Frederick ended the game getting the final two outs and recorded the save, her second of the season.     With the win, Coastal Head Coach Jess Dannelly has now recorded 900 career wins as a collegiate head coach. Dannelly is in his 20th season as the CCU softball head coach and has recorded 627 wins with the program. In addition, Dannelly was the head baseball coach at USC-Salkehatchie for nine seasons from 1975 to 1984.
