RADFORD, Va.—The Coastal Carolina University softball team fell to the Highlanders from Radford University 8-1 on Saturday, Apr. 7 amid scattered snow flurries throughout the contest.
Brittany Birnbaum hit her second career homerun in the loss. With the loss, the Chanticleers fell to 15-24 overall and 3-2 in the conference. Radford’s Cassie Rhodes put the Highlanders on top early with a line drive homer that hit the scoreboard in the bottom of the first. The 1-0 lead held until the top of the fifth, when
Brittany Birnbaum (Chino Hills, Calif./Ayala) broke up a no-hitter and tied the game with a homerun of the left field fence. Birnbaum finished the game 2-for-3 for CCU. In the bottom half of the inning the Highlanders responded. With two outs, Rhodes singled to the right side that scored one and gave Radford a 2-1 advantage. Pitcher Ashley Taylor then put one over the right centerfield fence with two runners on to go on top 5-1. RU (31-17, 5-1 BSC) added three more runs in the sixth with back-to-back RBI doubles that extended the lead to 8-1. Birnbaum,
Alicia Irwin (Salina, Kan./Salina South), and
Carla Hood (Marion, S.C./Marion) singled in the seventh to load the bases, but the Chants were retired before making it across home plate to suffer the 8-1 loss.
Brittney Hollifield (4-6) took the loss for Coastal. She allowed nine hits, eight runs, struck out one and walked three. The Lady Chants return home on Wednesday, Apr.11 to play a doubleheader with the North Carolina Tarheels at 4 p.m.
