Amanda Stull (Rushville, Ind./Rushville Consolidated) had 14 points apiece as the Coastal Carolina University women’s basketball team (15-7, 3-4 Big South) defeated UNC Asheville (10-14, 1-6 Big South) 54-46 Feb. 13 at Kimbel Arena. Coastal started off cold as Asheville built a 14-6 lead in the first 8:34. Ashleigh Barton scored eight points in that stretch, while Ana Baker’s layup gave UNCA the 14-6 advantage. Coastal would cut the lead to 16-12 at 8:18 on a layup from freshman
Katie White (St. Charles, Ill./East). Asheville would build the lead to 21-15 on a Baker jumper with 5:28 left, but Coastal went on a 7-0 run capped by a Stull jumper at 2:44, giving the Lady Chants the 22-21 lead. Blanchard’s layup at 2:04 ended the scoring in the first half as Coastal went to the lockerrroom with a 24-23 lead. Blanchard had seven late points in the first half. She also added five rebounds. Stull had six points, five rebounds and three assists. For Asheville, Barton had eight points and six rebounds. Coastal shot 33.3 percent in the first half, while holding Asheville to 25.0 percent. Coastal built a 30-23 lead on a Blanchard jumper with 17:38 left. Coastal would lead by as much as 11 in the second half, the latest at 9:49 on a jumper from sophomore
Devin Rivers (Miami, Fla./Felix Varela). Asheville would cut the lead to 42-39 with 7:22 left on free throws from Chioma Okoli, but free throws by Stull and sophomore
Lacey Lyons (Beverly Hills, Fla./Crystal River) and a big jumper from freshman
Kate Jasinski (Toledo, Ohio/Penn (Ind.)) gave Coastal the eight-point win. Stull added eight rebounds and six assists to her 14 points, while Blanchard had seven rebounds and six steals. Lyons had nine points and five rebounds. For Asheville, Stacy Shepard had a double-double with 11 points and 14 rebounds, while Barton and Baker had 10 points apiece. Coastal had 18 steals on the night and forced 23 turnovers. The Lady Chants also had four blocked shots from White. Coastal shot 37.3 percent from the field and were 14-of-21 from the free-throw line, led by Stull’s 6-for-6 performance. Asheville outrebounded Coastal 40-37 and got five steals from Baker. Coastal travels to Liberty Saturday, Feb. 16 at 7 p.m. Asheville is off until Feb. 20 when it travels to High Point for a 7 p.m. game.
