CONWAY, S.C. - Pedro Ribeiro scored the game-winning goal to lead Coastal Carolina to its third straight victory with a 1-0 win in double overtime over UNC Asheville Wednesday afternoon from the Coastal Carolina Soccer Field.
Ribeiro scored just over one minute into the second overtime to collect his team-leading fourth goal of the season. The scoring opportunity was started near midfield when Justin Portillo played the ball forward to a streaking Ribeiro.
Ribeiro timed his run perfectly and split the UNC Asheville defense and controlled the ball at his feet with only the Bulldog keeper left to beat. Ribeiro took a few dribbles and then lifted a chip shot over a charging Lassi Hurskainen for his third game-winning goal of the season.
"I'm very pleased to win the game because it's always such a difficult game whenever we play UNC Asheville," Coastal Carolina head coach Shaun Docking said. "They have a good team and they have a very good coach and we knew it would be a very difficult game. I'm delighted that we won the game."
Coastal Carolina (7-4-1, 3-1-0) finished the game with a 17-11 edge in shots and a 10-4 advantage in corner kicks. The Chanticleer offense tallied eight shots on goal and current Big South Player of the Week Rodrigo Vianna was inches away from scoring a pair of goals during the contest.
Chanticleer junior keeper Scott Angevine finished with five saves and earned his fifth shutout of the season. Angevine made several diving saves in the second half to keep the game scoreless and allow Coastal to net the golden goal.
UNC Asheville (3-8-1, 1-3-1) came inches from scoring a goal with just over 10 minutes left to play in regulation. Bulldog junior forward Bryan George played a ball into the Chanticleer box from the right sideline and forward Bryan Bartels connected for a strike that appeared on its way into the back of the Coastal net. Angevine, however, leaped to his left and deflected the ball just enough to change its course and end over the backline.
Angevine stopped another scoring chance with less than five minutes remaining in the second half on a shot from Alex Koslick. The Bulldog offense played a through ball that hit Koslick in stride for a one-on-one with Angevine. Angevine left his post and met Koslick just inside the Coastal box and made a diving save to leave the game scoreless.
"Scott kept us in the game today, and I think UNC Asheville was very unlucky not to win the game today," Docking said. "Scott really did a great job for us today and I was really pleased with the way he has played for us all year."
The Chanticleers have now beaten the Bulldogs nine straight times and have not fallen to UNC Asheville since the 2004 season.
Coastal returns to the pitch Saturday at 7 p.m. when the Chanticleers travel to Boiling Springs, N.C., to take on Gardner Webb from Greene-Harbison Field.
