CONWAY, S.C. - The Coastal Carolina University volleyball team outlasted Radford 3-1 (34-32, 25-20, 25-27, 25-21) on Saturday, Oct. 16 at Kimbel Arena. The Chanticleers improve to 11-11 overall and 4-4 in the Big South while the Highlanders fall to 7-15 and 1-7 in the conference.
The Chants had four players finish with double-digit kills, including Erika Lightsey, who registered a new career-high of 21 kills, hitting .340 on the day. Chelsy Kimes recorded her 12th double-double of the season with 11 kills and 17 digs. Meghan Laffin tallied 14 kills, and Megan Bickford posted five blocks while Lindsay Gill finished with 28 digs. Kelsie Mauck dished a new career-high 51 assists and contributed 10 kills offensively.
The Highlanders also had four players register double-digit kills, with Laura Waddell recording 15 kills. Carly Fleming added 11 kills while Desiree Aramburu and Megan McWhorter each finished with 10 kills a piece. Katelyn Meeks tallied 23 digs and Aramburu dished out 44 assists.
The marathon first set concluded with Coastal coming out on top 34-32, following 17 ties and five lead changes. It was the longest set the Chanticleers have played all season as both teams were evenly matched. The set was close from the beginning with no team leading by more than four. At 21-all, the Chants and Highlanders went point for point with no team able to keep the advantage, forcing 11 ties. At 32-all, Coastal took the lead for the final time with a kill by Kimes, and Laffin ended the set on a kill from Mauck. Laffin finished the set with seven kills while Mauck tallied 21 assists. Radford's Waddell had six kills and Aramburu finished with 15 assists.
Radford went out to an early 4-1 lead, but an 8-4 run by Coastal tied the second set at 9-all. The Chants tried to put the set away, but could not go up by more than three, allowing the Highlanders to come within one point at 19-18. Coastal finished the set on a 5-2 run with Lightsey coming alive, recording a set-high five kills.
In the third set, Radford went up 3-1, but Coastal answered back with a 12-4 run of its own to put the Chants up at 13-7. With a six point lead, the Highlanders gradually built a comeback, tying the set at 23-all. Following two ties, Coastal could not hold off the Radford attack as the Highlanders took the set on a Chanticleer attack error and a kill by Waddell, forcing a fourth set. Aramburu recorded six kills, nine assists and six digs for the Highlanders.
Radford took an early 5-1 lead in the fourth and final set of the match. The Chants battled back to take the final lead at 13-12. Following a 5-2 Coastal run, Radford went on a 4-0 run to put them within one at 18-17, forcing Coastal to take a timeout. The Chants finished the set on a 7-4 run to end the match at 25-21. Lightsey added another five kills for Coastal to finish with a career-high 21.
The Chanticleers will return to the court on Tuesday, Oct. 19 to face Campbell at 6 p.m. in Kimbel Arena. The match will feature a Bookstore Bash with giveaways and promotions sponsored by the Coastal Carolina Bookstore. It will also be faculty and staff night, as the squad will honor employees at Coastal.
The Highlanders return home to host Winthrop on Friday, Oct. 22 at 7 p.m.
