TALLAHASSEE, FLA. - The Coastal Carolina University softball team (4-4) finished out the Seminole Classic with a 2-0 win over Big South Conference-foe Gardner-Webb to finish third in the tournament. Overall, the Chanticleers went 2-3 at the event.
Freshman Olivia Piccirillo got Coastal on the board in the second inning with a hard-hit ball over the left field fence for her second solo home run of the weekend. Alyssa Tornatore followed with a double down the left field line, but was left stranded.
In the bottom of the third inning, the Chants started right where they left off in the second, as Michelle Evans opened the inning with an infield single to shortstop. With two down, Jazmin Daigle singled to put runners on first and second and Stacy Snellings loaded the bases on her infield single. However, a ground out ended the scoring threat for the Chanticleers.
Coastal extended its lead in the bottom of the fifth. Ballard and Sarah Maples opened the inning with back-to-back singles and moved to second and third on Evans' flyout. Daigle then scored Ballard on a sacrifice bunt down the third base line to give the Chants the 2-0 lead and a continued threat with Maples in scoring position at third. The Chanticleers were not able to bring her home, but the two-run lead proved to be enough to get the victory.
Senior Ashley Frederick pitched her first shutout of the season, improving to 2-2 on the season after scattering five hits and striking out five. Frederick ran into a jam in the fifth inning with runners in scoring position, but was able to pitch out of the jam with the help of the defense. Ballard was 2-for-3 with a run scored, as seven Chanticleers recorded hits in the win.
Coastal returns home for its season opener against DePaul on Friday, Feb. 26, at 6:15 p.m. in its first game of the Kickin' Chicken Classic.
