CONWAY, S.C. - The Coastal Carolina University softball team lost a tough 10-inning, 3-1 heartbreaker to in-state foe South Carolina Wednesday, March 24 at the Coastal Carolina Softball Field. The Chanticleers fell to 14-15 on the season while the Gamecocks improve to 10-19.
The game started as a pitching duel between Ashley Frederick and Ashley Chastain and ended as a fight, with Frederick pitching her 12th complete game of the season. Frederick droppedl to 9-8, allowing three runs, with only one earned, on eight hits and striking out six in 10 innings of play.
The game remained scoreless until the top of the fourth when South Carolina took a 1-0 lead. Lauren Lackey reached base on an error and was eventually brought across the plate on a P.J. Fulmer single to left center field.
Coastal Carolina answered right back with Ashley Pisone leading off with a solo blast over the center field fence to tie the game 1-1. Pisone's home run was her fifth of the season.
The Gamecocks tried to get something started in the fifth, but left the inning with the bases loaded and the game still tied at one.
After five scoreless innings, South Carolina finally put two runs across the plate in the 10th inning with a lead off two-run dinger by Laura Mendes, scoring Adele Voigt, who was placed on second by the international tie-breaker rule. The Chanticleers were unable to produce a 10th-inning rally despite putting Mecaela Ballard on second and Snellings recording a base hit. Snellings went 3-for-5 on the night, leading the Chants.
Coastal Carolina continues its 14-game homestand with the final home tournament of the season, the Coastal Carolina Softball Tournament. The Chants open the event by taking on Longwood for the second time this season Saturday, March 27 at 10 a.m.
