Game One Box Score / Game Two Box Score

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. - The Coastal Carolina University softball team dropped its doubleheader to Gardner-Webb Saturday, April 10, as it fell 4-2 in game one and 2-0 in the second game. The Chanticleers fall to 19-20 overall and 1-3 in the Big South Conference while the Bulldogs improve to 14-23 and 4-4 in the league.

In the first game against Gardner-Webb, the Chanticleers recorded 10 hits, but were unable to string together the runs to match. Stacy Snellings, Jazmin Daigle and Cacia Pierre all tallied two hits with four other Chants earning one hit.

The Bulldogs got on the board early after Lindsea Hutchinson doubled to right center field, sending Mandy Ward, who reached bases on an infield error, home.

Coastal tried to get a run of its own in the top of the second. Sarah Maples led of the frame with a walk and Alyssa Tornatore sent her to second on a single through the left side. Mecaela Ballard advanced both runners on a ground out, but third was as far as Maples got as the Chants left two runners stranded.

The Chanticleers finally pushed a run across the plate in the fifth inning after Snellings double to left field and Daigle came up with a double of her own, bringing Snellings home to tie the game.

The tie did not last for long as Gardner-Webb brought in three runs to take the lead. Jordyn Arrowood singled up the middle to lead off the inning and Christa Fullwood brought in the first of three runs with a single to left field. Mandy Ward cleared the bases with two outs on a home run over the center field fence, putting the Bulldogs up three runs at 4-1.

Ashley Pisone cut the Bulldog lead to two in the top of the seventh with a lead off blast down the left field line, her eighth dinger of the season. Snellings and Daigle hit back-to-back singles, putting runners at first and second with no outs. Cindy Boomhower came in to relieve Christine Murray and forced a ground out and two strike outs to end the game and earn her first save of the season.

Katelin Edwards started in the circle for the Chants, allowing four runs on seven hits and striking out three in 4.2 innings of work before Megan Johnson came to pitch the remaining 1.1 innings. Edwards falls to 9-7 on the season while Murray improves to 8-11 with the win.

In the second game, the Bulldogs were the first to score on a solo home run by Fullwood and it was the only run scored until the bottom of the sixth.

The Chants had trouble hitting Boomhower in the second game, recording their first hit in the fourth inning by Daigle.

Coastal tried to get something started in the fifth off singles by Maples and Tornatore, putting runners at first and second. The Chants could not capitalize, stranding both runners.

In the sixth inning, Pierre led the two-out rally with a hit through the right side and Michelle Evans followed with a single to the third baseman. Johnson came in to pinch run for Pierre and advanced to third on a throwing error by the catcher. Both Johnson and Evans ended the inning left on base.

Gardner-Webb walked in its second run of the game after Coastal loaded the bases, putting the Bulldogs up 2-0.

Ashley Frederick took the loss, falling to 11-11 after allowing two runs on nine hits and striking out six. Boomhower earns the win after allowing just five hits.

Coastal is back in action tomorrow (April 11) at Gardner-Webb for the final game of the three-game series. The game is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.April 10, 2010
