Softball Defeats South Carolina 4-3

COLUMBIA, S.C. - The Coastal Carolina University softball team defeated South Carolina 4-3 Wednesday, April 21 at Beckham Field to earn its 21st win of the season. The Chanticleers improve to 21-24 overall while the Gamecocks fall to 11-34.

Ashley Pisone finished the day going 2-for-2 with two RBI's and two stolen bases while Alyssa Tornatore, Sarah Maples and Olivia Williams recorded a hit apiece.

Ashley Frederick got the start in the circle for the Chants, allowing three runs on five hits while striking out four. Frederick improves to 11-14 on the season while Ashley Chastain took the loss to fall to 4-14.

The Chanticleers got on the board early, scoring two runs in the top of the second. Stacy Snellings reached on an error by the second baseman and Tornatore recorded the first hit for Coastal with a single down the right field line, putting runners at first and second. Williams reached on a fielder's choice with Snellings being called out at third. Olivia Piccirillo loaded the bases with a walk. The first run came across the plate on a wild pitch, scoring Tornatore. Ashley Pisone drove in the second run on a single through the left side, scoring Williams and giving the Chants a 2-0 advantage.

South Carolina brought in its first run of the game in the fifth inning after stranding two runners on base in both the first and fourth innings. Adele Voigt led off the inning for the Gamecocks with a double and Laura Mendes brought in the run with a single up the middle, cutting the Coastal lead to one.

Coastal added two more runs in the seventh frame. Mecaela Ballard drew a walk with one out while Pisone followed with a triple, her second of the season and went home on a throwing error, putting the Chanticleers ahead 4-1.

The Gamecocks fought back in the bottom of the seventh after Mendes hit her third home run of the season to bring in two runs, but South Carolina was stopped short as the Coastal defense came up with two big outs to end the game.

The Chanticleers return home for their final three-game home series of the season against Presbyterian April 24-25.
