LYNCHBURG, Va. - The Coastal Carolina University softball team fell 8-2 at Liberty in the final game of the regular season Saturday, May 8 at the Liberty Softball Field. The Chanticleers fall to 25-29 overall and 6-12 in the Big South while Liberty improves to 37-16 and 13-5 in the league.
Coastal stuck early, scoring one run in the first inning. Ashley Pisone started the game with a lead off single up the middle. Sarah Maples advanced her to second on a successful sacrifice bunt and Stacy Snellings brought Pisone home with a double to left field, giving the Chants a 1-0 lead.
The Chanticleers drove in another run in the top of the second to take a 2-0 lead. Michelle Evans led off the frame with a walk and Alyssa Tornatore followed with a single through the left side, sending Evans to second. Olivia Williams advanced both runners on a sacrifice bunt and Brittany Bailey brought Evans home with a groundout to the shortstop.
Down 2-0, Liberty got hot with a three-run home run by J'nae Jefferson in the bottom of the second inning, giving the Flames a 3-2 lead.
The Flames added another three runs in the third, including a double by Bridgett Woods, to bring in the first run and a home run by Meredith Baisden, scoring the second and third runs of the inning for a 6-2 lead.
Liberty struck again in both the fourth and fifth innings, scoring one run in each of the frames for an 8-2 lead.
Four Chants recorded hits in the contest in Pisone, Snellings, Cacia Pierre and Tornatore.
Katelin Edwards started in the circle for the Chanticleers, pitching 2.2 innings and allowing six runs on seven hits. Michelle Evans pitched in relief, allowing one run on three hits while Megan Johnson closed out the game, allowing one run on two hits. Edwards took the loss for Coastal, falling to 11-10 on the season. Katrina Johnson threw a complete game for the Flames, giving up two runs on four hits to improve to 10-4 on the season.
Coastal returns home to host the Big South Tournament May 13-15.
