Head Coach Kelley Green Talks About Fall Season After Doubleheader
WILMINGTON, S.C. - The Coastal Carolina University softball team played its first doubleheader of the fall season Saturday, Sept. 25 at UNC Wilmington. The Chanticleers split the games, falling 3-2 to Mount Olive, but picking up the 5-1 win against host UNC Wilmington.
In game one against Mount Olive, Coastal came up one run short, but finished the game with five hits. Despite some poor base running decisions, the Chants had three stolen bases and senior Ashley Pisone and junior Stacy Snellings each recorded RBIs.
Senior pitcher Katelin Edwards picked up the loss, throwing four innings and allowing four hits. Freshman Ashley Bagwell came in to pitch the final two scoreless innings, giving up just one hit.
"Although I'm never happy with a loss, I'm pleased that we learned a lot from this game," Head Coach Kelley Green said. "Base running is so important in our game and I think each player on our squad learned how much of an impact it can make."
The Chanticleers bounced back in the second game against UNC Wilmington with a 5-1 win. Sophomore Megan Johnson earned the start for Coastal in the circle and picked up her first win of the year after four innings, giving up two hits and one unearned run. Michelle Evans pitched in relief, throwing the final three innings and going three up and three down while giving up no hits and striking out three.
Offensively, Coastal finished with six hits and Pisone, Jazmin Daigle and Jessie Winans all had extra base hits.
"Other than the first play of the game, I thought our defense was strong and made some great plays and decisions," Green said. "We have so much to learn still, but it was nice to see the potential that defense has to do well."
Coastal will play its next doubleheader Saturday, Oct. 2 at the Coastal Carolina Softball Field. The first game is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
