CONWAY - Swarming defensive pressure and 42 points from the starting five propelled the Coastal Carolina women's basketball team to a 59-36 win over in-state rival College of Charleston on Monday night inside Kimbel Arena.

The win marks the sixth for the Chants in the schools' last seven meetings, improving Coastal to 2-0 on the young season.

Coastal grabbed the lead with 6:19 remaining in the first half and never looked back as the Chants turned 27 Cougar turnovers in the game into 27 points. The Chanticleers' attacking defensive play kept the visitors scoreless from 5:01 to play in the first half until 14:20 remaining in the second half. During that time, the white clad Chants used a 17-point run to take an 18-point lead.

The Chanticleers opened the second half on a 13-9 run to expand its lead to 17 at 43-26. During the run, the Chanticleer defense clamped down on the Cougars - forcing a myriad of contested and ill-fated shots. Taylor Epley scored four of her eight points during the stretch as Kira Carter, Shatia Cole, Angelica Henry, Olivia Irick and Shanika Maddox each added a bucket.

Coastal would outscore the College the remainder of the way to account for the 59-36 final.

The Chanticleers took an early 12-8 lead on the visitors in the first half; however, a six-plus minute dry spell coupled with seven turnovers allowed the Cougars to take a 13-12 advantage with 6:23 remaining before intermission. The Chants responded on their next two possessions as Carter knocked down a triple from the wing and Kayla Cook converted a layup in the lane to regain the lead at 18-16.

The Chants closed out the half on a 12-1 run to take a 13-point lead, its largest of the half, into the locker room. During the run, five different Chants found the bottom of the basket.

Carter scored a game-high 10 points on 3-of-7 from the field as Henry and Cole each put together nine point efforts. Irick and Maddox were Coastal's top two rebounders with nine and eight caroms, respectively.

Megan Fischer led the Cougars with nine points and Mikaela Hopkins pulled down a game-high tying nine boards.

The Chanticleers return to the hardwood on Saturday, Nov. 19 as hosts to St. Andrews. The opening tip is slated for 2 p.m.
