Softball Falls 6-0 at Radford

RADFORD, Va. - The Coastal Carolina University softball team fell 6-0 to Radford in the final game of the three-game series on Monday, April 18 as the Highlanders swept the series. The Chanticleers fall to 17-26 overall and 3-6 in the Big South while the Highlanders improve to 28-14 and 9-2 in the league.

After two scoreless innings, Radford got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the third scoring three runs. Hannah Ojeda led off with a single to left centerfield and after back-to-back errors in left field, Ojeda went to third. Kristen Shifflett brought Ojeda home with a double down the left field line for the first score of the game. Nicole Beall followed with a double to centerfield, sending Shifflett across the plate. The final run came home on Taylor Cunningham's single to center for a 3-0 Highlander lead.

The Highlanders added three more runs in the bottom of the fourth. Ojeda slammed a double to left center with one out and Lauren Williams reached base on a fielding error at first and ran to second, putting runners at second and third. After a groundout, Nicole Beall doubled to center, bringing Ojeda and Williams home. The final run of the inning came on a single to right field by Cunningham, sending Beall home for a 6-0 Radford lead.

Coastal held Radford scoreless for the remaining two innings, but the Chants could not come up with a clutch hit and manufacture a run despite getting one hit in five of the seven innings. Sophomore Jazmin Daigle went 2-for-3 to lead Coastal.

Freshman Ashley Bagwell started in the circle for the Chanticleers, throwing two hitless innings before allowing six runs, three earned, on seven hits while striking out three. In the middle of the fourth inning, senior Katelin Edwards came in to pitch in relief, giving up only one hit in 2.1 innings worked. Bagwell got the loss, falling to 9-12 on the season.

Radford's Jackie Jenkins threw her second complete game against Coastal, allowing just five hits. Jenkins improves to 13-2 overall.

The Chanticleers return home to host UNC Wilmington in a doubleheader on Tuesday, April 19. The first game is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.
