CONWAY, S.C. - The Coastal Carolina University softball team dropped both games of a doubleheader against College of Charleston on Wednesday, April 6, falling 6-1 in game one and 4-0 in the night cap. The Chanticleers fall to 14-21 overall while the Cougars improve to 23-15.
In game one, College of Charleston was first to strike, scoring two runs in the top of the first. Lizzy Vaughn singled to second base and Katie Forbes cleared the bases with a home run to centerfield for an early 2-0 Cougar lead.
Kelsey Hodgson added another run to the Cougar's total in the top of the third with a homer to right field, giving College of Charleston a 3-0 lead.
In the top of the fourth inning, the Cougars scored two runs to take a 5-0 lead. Amanda Lonergan led off with a single to second and Kaitlyn White came in to pinch run. Ashton Jarrett sent White to second on a sacrifice bunt and Carly Corthell took her to third on a bunt single. Corthell stole second giving College of Charleston runners at second and third with one out. After two Coastal errors, both White and Corthell scored before the inning came to a close.
College of Charleston scored its final run of the first game on a dinger by Kristi Woodall to right center for a 6-0 lead.
The Chanticleers finally got on the board in the bottom of the sixth as Chelsea Pineda homered to centerfied, cutting the Cougar lead to five at 6-1.
Coastal had a chance to add a few more runs to its total in the bottom of the seventh. Cacia Pierre led off the inning with a single through the right side and Courtney Howell came in to pinch run. Howell advance to second on an illegal pitch and Stacy Snellings drew a walk, putting runners at first and second. Both Howell and Snellings advanced a base on a wild pitch. Desiree Zaragoza reached first on a fielder's choice as Howell was called out at home. Brooke Donovan drew a walk with two outs to load the bases, but Coastal could not get a run across stranding all three runners to end the game.
Katelin Edwards started in the circle for the Chants, pitching a complete game and allowing six runs on 10 hits while striking out four. She falls to 3-5 on the season. Alexa Datka threw seven innings for College of Charleston, giving up one run on two hits while striking out four.
In game two, both teams remained scoreless until the top of the four when the Cougars scored four runs. After a lead-off double by Forbes, Kelsey Hodgson cleared the bases with a home run to left center. Katie Pesature followed with a single to second and Woodall homered to centerfield for a 4-0 Cougar lead.
The four runs in the fourth inning for College of Charleston proved to be enough as the Cougars went on to win 4-0.
Michelle Evans started in the circle for Coastal, throwing 3.2 innings and allowing four runs on seven hits while striking out three. Ashley Bagwell came in to throw the remaining 3.1 innings, giving up no runs on three hits and striking out six. Stephanie Saylors pitched a complete game shutout for the Cougars, allowing two runs and striking out six.
The Chanticleers return to the field on Saturday, April 9 as they host Big South Conference foe Winthrop in a doubleheader. The first game is slated to begin at 1 p.m.
