ROCK HILL, S.C. - Playing in their second Big South Conference match of the season, the Coastal Carolina volleyball team was bested by Winthrop 3-0 on Saturday. The Chanticleers are 6-10 on the season and 0-2 in conference play following Saturday's match.
Winthrop scored the first two points of the first set, but Coastal responded by scoring the next two points on a kill by senior Erika Lightsey and sophomore Meghan Laffin. The Eagles used an 11-0 run to build up a 17-4 lead. The Chanticleers attempted to make a late run at Winthrop, but it came up short as the Eagles took the first set 25-13.
During the second set Winthrop scored the first six points before freshman Katie Martin was able to get Coastal on the board with a kill. The Chanticleers made several small runs to get back into the set and Lightsey pulled Coastal within two on a kill to put the score at 20-18. The Eagles then used a 5-1 run to close out the second set 25-19.
Coastal built up a four point lead early in the third set going ahead 8-4 on an attack error by the Eagles. Winthrop tied the set up at nine apiece when Coastal was unable to convert on an attack. The Eagles then took their second lead of the third set scoring the next two points, but Coastal rallied to eventually tie the score at 13-13 on a kill by senior Kelsey Mauck. Neither team was able to pull away until late in the set when Winthrop used a 4-1 run to go ahead 22-19, before going on to win 25-21.
Martin finished the match with nine kills, two service aces, and an attacking percentage of .316 to lead Coastal. Lightsey also posted nine kills for the Chanticleers. Freshman Lian Bernett and sophomore Lauren Alejo each had seven digs, while Mauck tallied 23 assists.
Winthrop was led by Becca Toor who finished with 12 kills and seven blocks, while Carly DeBruhl finished with 12 digs and Stephanie Palmer recorded 21 assists.
Coastal will return home for their next match on Tuesday, September 27 at 6:00 p.m. when they face College of Charleston in Kimbel Arena.
