CLEARWATER, Fla. - During the second day of the USF Under Armour Tournament the Coastal Carolina softball team dropped a 3-0 decision to Kent State on Saturday, while suffering a 7-1 loss to Boston University. Following Saturday's action the Chanticleers are 21-7 overall.
Kent State had a runner in scoring position during the first inning, as Lauren Grimes advanced to second on a fly out by Alex Marcantonio and to third on a single by Jessica Blanton. Coastal picked up the third out of the inning on a six to three play before Kent State was able to get on the board.
The Flashes went ahead 1-0 in the third inning on a single to center field by Blanton that scored Abbey Ledford.
Nicole Saggiomo had the Chanticleers first opportunity to score in the bottom of the third inning when she advanced to second on a single by Sarah Maples.
Coastal's defense posted a three and out in the fourth inning against Kent State and tried to tie the game in the bottom of the inning as Kiana Quolas advanced to third during Cacia Pierre's hit.
The Chanticleers had another chance to tie the game in the fifth inning as Maples advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Brooke Donovan.
Kent State built up a three run lead in the sixth inning following a run by Sarah Starr and Mary Holt.
Pierre and Nicole Saggiomo ended the game with two hits in three at bats. Maples and Jazmin Daigle each finished the game with one hit in three at bats.
Quolas pitched a complete game on the mound for the Chanticleers, striking out five, giving up nine hits and one walk in 30 batters faced.
Emma Johnson earned the win on the mound for the Flashes after pitching a complete game, striking out eight, allowing six hits and two walks in 28 batters faced.
The Chanticleers came out against Boston University and recorded six straight outs against the Terriers during the first two innings. During the bottom of the third inning Sarah Maples put Coastal ahead 1-0 after scoring on a double to left field by Donovan.
Megan Volpano tied the game at one apiece in the top of the fourth inning after scoring on a double by Amy Ekart. Boston University took the 2-1 advantage when Ekart scored on a double by Brittany Clendeny.
Coastal struggled to score during the remainder of the game, while the Terriers went ahead by three in the fifth inning with runs by Emily Roesch and Chelsea O'Connor. Clendeny earned the fifth run for Boston University in the sixth inning on a double by Emily Felhaum. The Terriers earned the final two runs in the seventh inning when O'Connor scored on a double by Volpano, who then crossed home plate on a single up the middle by Ekart.
Maples posted one hit and one run in three at bats, while Donovan had one hit and one RBI in three at bats. Hayden recorded one hit in three at bats and Jessie Winans had one hit in two at bats.
Ashley Bagwell pitched a complete game for Coastal, striking out five, allowing 11 hits, while not giving up a walk in 32 batters faced.
Erin Schuppert struck out five, allowed four hits and no walks in 26 batters faced during seven innings pitched.
Coastal returns to action on Sunday against Bryant University at 9 a.m. in the final day of the USF Under Armour Tournament.
