CONWAY - After earning two wins over Liberty yesterday, Coastal was looking to sweep the Flames in a three game series for the first time in program history on Sunday, but the Chanticleers came up short in the 4-2 loss. The Chants are 32-15 on the season and 9-6 in Big South Conference action following Sunday's play.
Coastal earned the only hit during the first two innings, as Sarah Maples reached first on a single to the shortstop in the first inning. The Chants took the 1-0 lead in the third inning following Maples second hit of the game, which was a double down the left field line that scored Jessie Winans.
Liberty picked up its first hit of the game in the top of the fifth inning on a single up the middle by Jenny Law. The Flames went ahead 2-1 during the sixth inning when Grace Nordan hit a single to center field that scored Amber Donovan and Kelby Allen.
The Chanticleers responded in the bottom of the inning on a home run to left center by Kiana Quolas. Quolas' third home run of the season tied the game at two apiece.
Sammi Shivock hit a double to right center field that put the Flames back ahead in the top of the seventh, as Jill Stephens and Marybeth Sciolino each advanced home.
Winans reached first for the Chanticleers in the bottom of the seventh with two outs, but Coastal picked up the third out of the inning during the next at bat to end the game.
Maples ended the day with two hits and one RBI in three at bats, along with three putouts and one assist. Quolas posted one hit, one RBI and one run in two at bats and was walked once. Winans had one hit and one run in three at bats for the Chanticleers. Chelsea Pineda recorded 10 putouts, while Kory Hayden had two putouts and two assists.
Ashley Bagwell finished the game striking out eight, walking four and allowing three hits in 29 batters faced over 6.1 innings pitched.
Chandler Ball pitched a complete game, striking out five, walking four, while giving up four hits in 28 batters faced.
Coastal returns to action on Friday, April 20 in its final conference road series against Campbell. The Chants play the Fighting Camels in a doubleheader beginning at 4 p.m. on Friday. The series wraps up on Saturday with a single game that starts at 2 p.m.
