Boiling Springs, N.C. - The Coastal Carolina men's tennis team picked up a 5-2 win Saturday afternoon at Gardner-Webb to end its three game losing streak. The win moves the Chanticleers to 11-9, 3-4 while the Runnin' Bulldogs drop to 12-11, 4-4.
The Chanticleers started the match strong, grabbing the opening point with a sweep of doubles competition.
Leo Christofides and Philippe Tsangaridis took an 8-4 win on the first court against GWU's Nikita Zverkov and Ernest Alberch.
Renana Samed and Garik Yedigarian followed with a win on court two, besting Ben Kaszas and Pepe Batalla in an 8-6 match.
Ted Nilsson and Jabor Al-Mutawa closed out the doubles round with an 8-7 win at No. 3 over Blake Dunlap and Jonathan Walker.
Coastal continued its dominant play as the match shifted to singles, taking four of the remaining six points.
#101 Tsangaridis delivered for Coastal at No. 1, downing Kaszas in three sets, 6-7, 6-3, 6-4.
Nilsson picked up a straight-sets win at No. 2 over Zverkov, and Christofides won a 6-3, 6-3 decision at No. 5 against Walker.
At No. 6, sophomore Hunter Whalen split his first two sets with Batalla before dispatching his opponent in the third set by a 6-3 margin.
Gardner-Webb's first point came at No. 4 where Brenden Dempsey downed Samed in straight sets. Alberch also picked up a win for the Runnin' Bulldogs, winning a three-set match over Yedigarian at No. 3.
The Chanticleers close out their regular season Sunday when they host Longwood for a 1 p.m. match. Prior to Sunday's match, Coastal's senior class of Leo Christofides and Ted Nilsson will be honored.
