CONWAY - The Coastal Carolina women's lacrosse team hosts conference opponent Presbyterian College for a 6 p.m. match at Brooks Stadium on Friday in its last regular season game before the Big South Women's Lacrosse Championship. Due to its proximity with Earth Day, Friday's game has also been designated as a "Go Green" game in association with Waste Management.
As part of the Go Green theme, staff members from Coastal Carolina's Sustainability Initiative will be on hand with an exhibit at the entrance to Brooks Stadium to discuss CCU's commitment to sustainability on campus and in the community, as well as offer tips on how to reduce environmental impact. The first 100 fans to arrive at Brooks Stadium will receive a free shower timer. In addition, two teams of fans will compete on the field at halftime in a special Recycle Relay.
The Chanticleers (4-11, 2-4) enter Friday's game ranked fifth in the Big South, one spot out of hosting a first-round game in the Big South Women's Lacrosse Championship. The league's playoff format for the 2014 season was changed to allow all eight teams into the tournament, with the top four seeds hosting first-round games and the top seed hosting the semifinals and championship.
Presbyterian, meanwhile, rounds out the bottom of the conference with a 4-11, 0-5 record, having lost its last six games including a 21-12 loss last time out to Campbell.
The two teams last met in the 2013 season when the Chanticleers came away with a close 16-15 victory after scoring six straight goals in the final 9:12 of regulation.
The Chants have been led offensively this season by sophomores Sara Nolan (27 goals, five assists, 32 points), Keri White (21 goals, 17 assists, 38 points) and Charlotte O'Leary (21 goals, six assists, 27 points), as well as freshman Alicia Geiter (21 goals, one assist, 22 points).
On the other side, Presbyterian showcases a proficient goal-scorer in senior attacker Brianne Ward, who boasts a team-high 28 goals to go along with her 19 assists for 47 points. In total, Presbyterian's roster features seven players who have recorded goals in the doubles digits.
Looking past Friday, Coastal Carolina will play its first conference tournament game on April 30 at a site and time yet to be determined.
If the current Big South standings hold, the Chants will travel to Rock Hill, S.C., to take on Winthrop in a first-round game. Winthrop (5-10, 2-3) has two games remaining against seventh-place Liberty and Presbyterian. The Chants will need a win on Friday and have Winthrop lose its final pair of games in order to overtake the fourth seed and have home-field advantage in the first round. The Eagles defeated the Chanticleers 16-10 when the teams met earlier this week.
