CONWAY - Coastal Carolina centerback Tommy Gudmundsson has been named to the College Soccer News National Team of the Week for games played Oct. 11-18. In addition, the Chanticleers remained ranked 11th in the publication's National Top-30 poll, moved up to 10th in the TopDrawerSoccer.com Top-25 National Poll and own the nation's 18th-best RPI.
Gudmundsson's work at centerback led the Chanticleers to a pair of victories in the past week. Gudmundsson, who played sparingly to start the season due to injury, logged the opening 56 minutes in the 2-1 victory over Campbell and did not allow the Fighting Camels to record a shot on goal during his time on the field. Against Liberty, Gudmundsson anchored the backline that held the Flames without a shot on goal during the entirety of the match. He also counted the game's only goal in the 86th minute as he scored in the box off a Miguel Gutierrez corner kick. The goal was Gudmundsson's first of the season, while the shutout was Coastal's seventh.
The National Team of the Week honor is the sixth earned by a Chanticleer this season. Gudmundsson joins goalkeeper Fernando Pina (three National Team of the Week plaudits for the week ending Sept. 1), defender Gutierrez (one National Team of the Week award for the week ending Sept. 7) and midfielder Sergio Camargo (one National Team of the Week award for the week ending Sept. 28) Chants to be recognized by a national publication.
The Shaun Docking-led Chanticleers rebounded from its first loss of the season to post a pair of Big South Conference wins last week. The Chants, which hold a 9-1-1 overall record and a 4-1-0 league mark, are paced by Bryce Follensbee's six goals and Camargo's four assists. In addition, the Chants' combined team save percentage of 0.857 ranks fifth-best in the NCAA.
Gudmundsson and the Chanticleers return to action Monday at 6 p.m., hosting 22nd-ranked Hofstra. The Pride enter the match with an impressive 10-4-0 record and 24 total goals scored.
