CONWAY - The Coastal Carolina softball team rolled to two more dominating wins on the first day of the Battle of the Beach Friday, routing Big 12 member Iowa State 13-3 in six innings and following up with an 8-0 five-inning shutout of St. Bonaventure.
The Chanticleers improved to 4-3 on the season, with all four of the victories coming by run-rule. Kiana Quolas led the offensive output, hitting a home run and a double in each game while totaling five RBIs. Amanda Daneker homered in the nightcap and also drove in five runs on the day, while Kory Hayden hit her 50th career home run to cap the Iowa State win and had four RBIs.
Coastal handed Iowa State (5-1) its first loss of the season while totaling 12 hits off of three Cyclone pitchers. Quolas went 3 for 4, while Daneker, Hayden and Kelsey Dominik each added two hits.
Coastal took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first as Bri Chiusano led off with an infield single, moved to second on a wild pitch and scored on a two-out single by Daneker. Iowa State answered with three runs on four hits - including a two-run homer - in the top of the second.
However, it was all Chanticleers from there as they scored four times in the fourth, five more in the sixth and then capped it off in the sixth with Hayden's three-run homer.
Quolas got things started in the fourth with a leadoff home run and, following a walk and an error, Daneker hit a two-run double to left to give Coastal the lead a 4-3. The sophomore later scored on a wild pitch.
The Chants then used four more hits and capitalized on two Iowa State errors in the fifth. Quolas doubled to right and singles by Morgan Noad and Hayden loaded the bases. Another wild pitch plated one run, two walks led to another and Kailey Mellen followed with a two-run single and came home shortly after when Devon Steiner stole second. A walk and hit batter then set Hayden up to finish it early in the sixth as she homered over the fence in right.
Quolas (2-2) recovered from the three-run second inning to hold Iowa State to just three hits in its remaining four at-bats. She allowed nine hits, struck out four and walked one.
Coastal carried the momentum into the game against St. Bonaventure, plating three runs in both the first and second innings before adding two more in the fourth. Kelsey Dominik notched the two-hit shutout in the circle, while striking out five and walking one.
Chiusano, who went 2 for 2 with three runs scored in the game, started it off with an infield single, stole second - her fifth of the year - moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on a sacrifice fly by Hayden. Daneker then hit a two-run bomb over the centerfield fence to make it 3-0.
In the second, Mellen drew a leadoff walk and Chiusano walked with two outs before Quolas hit her second longball of the day over the fence in left for a three-run shot. She now has 24 career homers, tying Cacia Pierre for sixth on the program's all-time list.
Cassidy Brzozowski led off the fourth with a walk, Chiusano laid down a bunt single and Quolas drove in another with a double to the gap in left-center. Noad then plated the eighth run with a sacrifice fly.
Dominik (2-1) retired the Bonnies in order in four of the five innings for her first shutout as a Chanticleer, allowing just a pair of singles - one of them an infield hit.
Coastal is back in action on Saturday at 3 p.m. to face Ole Miss (4-4), followed by another game against St. Bonaventure.
