FARMVILLE, Va. - The Coastal Carolina softball team opened up Big South Conference play by splitting a pair of five-inning games at Longwood on Tuesday, rolling to an 11-2 victory in the opener before a 13-5 setback in the nightcap.

The Chanticleers (13-14, 1-1) pounded out a season-high 14 hits in the win, including home runs by Kelsey Dominik, Sara Rasley and Kory Hayden. Kiana Quolas went 3 for 3 with an RBI and two runs scored, Hayden had two hits and three RBIs and Bri Chiusano and Morgan Noad each added two hits, with Chiusano scoring twice and Noad driving in two.

Hayden's three RBIs gave her 163 for her career and moved her past Holly Lee for second place on CCU's all-time list. Only Sherry Johnson, who is tied for the Big South career mark, has more with 194.

In the second game, Longwood (7-14, 1-1) scored six runs in the first inning, the Chants rallied to score five in the third, but the Lancers pulled away with five of their own in the fourth to post their first victory over Coastal in eight Big South games since they joined the league in 2013.

Coastal got its offense going right away in the first game, taking advantage of a leadoff walk to Chiusano and two hits to take a 2-0 lead in the first inning. Quolas followed with a bunt single and a sacrifice by Hayden moved both runners into scoring position. Amanda Daneker then ripped an RBI single past the third baseman and Noad lifted a flyball to shallow left-center that was caught by the shortstop, allowing Quolas to score from third and make it 2-0.

Longwood quickly cut the deficit in half as Emily Murphy led off the bottom of the inning with a home run to left. However, the Chants got the run back in the top of the second as Maicie Hahn hit a one-out double to left and scored on a two-out RBI single to center by Quolas.

Coastal then exploded for six runs on seven hits while sending 11 batters to the plate in the top of the third. Noad started it off with a leadoff double and, after fouling off two bunt attempts, Dominik hammered a two-run homer into the road in center, her sixth of the season. The Chants then went back-to-back once again this season as Rasley hit next pitch over the fence in left-center and into the road. Kailey Mellen followed with a single, moved to second a sacrifice, went to third on an infield single by Chiusano and scored on a passed ball to make it 7-1. After Quolas walked, Hayden lined one that dropped in front of the left-fielder for an RBI single and Noad got her second hit of the inning, a run-scoring single to right-center that made it 9-1.

Quolas pitched out of trouble in the bottom of the fourth. After two singles and a walk to slugger Megan Baltzell loaded the bases with two outs, Quolas got a flyout to Chiusano to end the inning.

The senior then led off the top of the fifth with a single to the fence in center and Hayden followed with her sixth homer of the year and 54th of her career for an 11-1 margin.

Murphy homered again in the bottom of the inning, but Quolas (7-8) closed out the run-rule victory with a popout and a forceout. She allowed five hits, struck out three and had just the one walk.

The second game did not start as well for the Chants as Longwood got three hits and capitalized on five walks and a key mental mistake by in the first inning. After Dominik walked Murphy leading off, she induced a grounder to short that turned from a potential double play into a fielder's choice and with no outs. That was followed by two more walks and a two-run single by Chelsea Sciacca that made it 3-0. Mackenzie Conrad entered in relief and walked her first batter, but then got two straight outs and was a strike away from ending the inning, but Casey Lifsey hit a two-run single and Justina Augustine added a run-scoring single.

Two fielding errors then helped the Lancers make it 7-0 in the second, but Coastal fought back with five runs on five straight hits in the top of the third. Quolas, Hayden, Noad and Dominik hit consecutive singles before Rasley followed with her first career grand slam to bring the Chants to within 7-5.

However, Murphy, a 2014 all-conference pick who entered the day batting just .190 on the season, hit her third homer of the day in the bottom of the inning to make it 8-5. Longwood then broke it open again with five runs on three hits in the fourth, capped by a grand slam by Baltzell.

Rasley and Noad each had two of the Chants' seven hits. Noad and Quolas both had four-hit days. Longwood totaled eight hits.

The teams will play the rubber game of the series Wednesday at 3 p.m.
