Box Score

FARMVILLE, Va. - Kory Hayden and Morgan Noad each hit a pair of home runs, but the Coastal Carolina softball team fell to Longwood 9-8 in the teams' series finale on Wednesday.

The Chanticleers (13-15, 1-2) scored the game's first five runs, but Longwood (8-14, 2-1) rallied for each of its runs on all nine of its hits in the last two turns at-bat. Noad's second homer, a three-run shot with two outs in the top of the seventh brought Coastal to within a run, but the Lancers got the final out.

Noad and Hayden each had two of the team's seven hits, with Noad totaling four RBIs and Hayden two. Noad's two homers gave her nine for the season and 39 for her career, moving her into third place alone in program history. Hayden now has eight on the season and 56 for her career. She is two away from tying the Big South all-time record. Kiana Quolas did not allow a hit through the first four innings, but suffered the loss.

As it did in the first game of the series, Coastal jumped on top in the first inning, using four hits and a walk, all with two outs to take a 4-0 lead. Hayden started it off by driving a 3-1 pitch from Libby Morris over the right-field fence. Noad then hit the next pitch to a similar spot, giving the Chants back-to-back homers for the sixth time this season, all in the last 13 games.

Morris then walked Kelsey Dominik and Sara Rasley kept the inning going with a single to left. Kailey Mellen followed with a two-run double over the left-fielder to make it 4-0.

Hayden then added her second homer of the game, going the other way again with two outs in the fifth for a 5-0 Coastal lead. The multi-HR game was the third of her career.

Longwood got on the board with two runs in the bottom of the inning. After a hit batter to start the frame, Chelsea Sciacca singled through the right side. Following a fielder's choice for the first out, an infield single on a ball that hit Quolas back up the middle scored the first run. A bunt single and a sacrifice fly plated the second.

The Lancers then took the lead with seven runs on six hits in the bottom of the sixth. It started with a Justina Augustine single and Augustine later added the eventual game-winning RBI on a double. In between, Megan Baltzell bunted for a hit and a throwing error on the play allowed a run to score. After a flyout and a wild pitch, shortstop Sara Rasley cut down Baltzell trying to score on a groundball for the second out. Longwood, though, followed with a single and two walks plated a run to tie the game at 5-5. Another infield single that Quolas provided the go-ahead run and Emily Murphy hit a two-run single to left, bringing Augustine back to the plate. Dominik entered in relief, but Augustine lined one to the gap in left-center.

Coastal tried to rally back in the seventh as Bri Chiusano singled with one out and Quolas was hit by a pitch. Morris was able to strike out Hayden, but Noad went the opposite way to give her a second career multi-homer game. Morris,, though, got a popout off the bat of Dominik for the final out.

Coastal returns to Conway this weekend to begin an eight-game homestand, beginning with a series against Campbell. The teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday at 2 p.m.
