SHELBY, N.C. - The Coastal Carolina softball team belted four more home runs in a 13-3 rout of Gardner-Webb Saturday afternoon to complete a three-game sweep and notch their eighth straight Big South victory.
Bri Chiusano, Morgan Noad, Kory Hayden and Kelsey Dominik each hit longballs for the Chanticleers, who improved to 21-17 overall and 9-2 in conference play. Amanda Daneker also had another strong day at the plate, going 3 for 4 as Coastal totaled 12 hits in the game and 38 for the series.
Dominik, who had a career-five RBIs, including a grand slam also earned the victory in the circle, pitching five innings in relief while allowing no earned runs on three hits.
After a two-run homer by Scarlett Harris in the first inning gave Gardner-Webb (11-22, 3-11) its only lead of the series, Chiusano put Coastal in front to stay with a three-run homer in the top of the second. Dominik walked and Kailey Mellen singled before Chiusano drilled one over the fence in left-center for the second home run of her career, both this season.
The Chanticleers then used two hits and two Gardner-Webb errors to score three more in the third. Noad went the opposite way for a solo homer, her 13th of the year and 43rd of her career. She is now one away from tying Holly Lee for second all-time in program history. Daneker followed Noad's homer with a single and Dominik reached on an error. After Sara Rasley walked, Mellen sent a grounder to the right side that got past the first baseman, allowing two runs to score to make it 6-2.
Gardner-Webb took advantage of a Coastal error to get a run back in the fourth, but the Chants scored twice more in the sixth and tacked on five in the seventh.
Hayden led off the sixth with her ninth homer of the season and 57th of her career, moving her to within one of equaling the Big South's all-time mark. Noad then walked and advanced to third on a Daneker single before scoring on an RBI groundout by Dominik to make it 8-3.
In the seventh, Chiusano led off with a bunt single, Kiana Quolas followed with an infield single and Chiusano stole third and came home on a throwing error. After Noad drew another walk, Dominik hammered one over the scoreboard in left field for her first grand slam as a Chanticleer.
Coastal now has 59 home runs on the season. The school record of 70 was set two seasons ago. Chiusano, Quolas and Hayden each had two hits, while Noad was 1 for 1 with four walks and three runs scored.
The Chanticleers return to Conway to begin a six-game homestand with a doubleheader against regional rival UNC Wilmington Tuesday at 4 p.m.
