Coastal Falls to #23/25 NC State

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The Coastal Carolina softball team suffered its first loss of the season versus #23/25 NC State 5-1 Friday morning in its first game of the River City Leadoff Tournament.

NC State scored four runs in the bottom of the third to take an early lead over the Chanticleers. This was the Chants first season opener loss in six years.

Through the first two innings both teams battle defensively allowing no hits for either team. Mackenzie Conrad battled to get a base hit in the top of the third but the Wolfpack's pitcher stuck out Morgan Noad for the third out.

Headed into the bottom of the third, NC State had two runners on base with no outs. The third batter in the lineup hit a homer for the Wolfpack to drive in two runs making it 3-0. Later on in the third, NC State was able to get another runner on base after a single down the line. Next at bat for NC State grounded out after they drove another run in to close out the third inning taking a 4-0 lead.

The Chanticleers made up for the damage defensively in the fourth when freshman Adriana Toro made a diving catch in the right field for the third out to end the inning.

Going into the top of the fifth, Devon Steiner and Taty Forbes each singled to left field getting runners on base in good scoring position but were unable to create any offense in the following plays.

NC State tacked on another run making it 5-0 in the bottom of the fifth before Coastal add one run in the sixth. The Chants saw some life when Kelsey Dominik hit a homer over center field putting the Chants on the board 5-1.

Dominik suffered the loss (0-1), allowing five earned runs on six hits. Coastal was held without a hit by NC State pitcher Courtney Mirabella, who struck out nine and walked three.
