Lacrosse Defeats Mercer, 8-5

CONWAY - Senior attacker Sara Nolan tallied four points (two goals, two assists) and freshman attacker Madeline Bromley added two goals and an assist to lead Coastal Carolina to an 8-5 victory over Mercer at Brooks Stadium Friday afternoon.

Senior midfielder Charlotte O'Leary (two goals) also chipped in for the Chanticleers, while Coastal midfielders Haley Alexander and Sophie Crowther had a goal apiece. After opening the season with back-to-back losses, Coastal (2-2) is now riding a two-game win streak. With the loss, Mercer slid to 1-3 on the young season.

It was truly a tale of two halves, as Coastal outscored Mercer, 5-2, in the second frame.

Jenna Stover (six saves) was sensational in the second half, holding the Bears to just two goals on five shots. The Chanticleers also had a strong defensive showing from Karley Barreno, who scooped four ground balls and caused four turnovers.

After Mercer and Coastal took a 3-3 tie into halftime, Mercer attacker Erica Coyne put the Bears on top with a score just seven seconds into the second half.

The Chanticleers kept fighting and came from behind with five of the next six goals in the game, including a score from Nolan off a feed from Bromley 9:20 into the second half.

Coastal had the advantage with 16 ground balls to 11. The Chanticleers outshot the Bears, 24-15, and had the edge with eight draw controls to seven. Mercer was led by Coyne and Lindsey Zeltwanger, who tallied two goals apiece.

The Chanticleers return to action on Sun., March 13 at 2 p.m. with a home game against Kennesaw State.
