Coastal Splits Big South Series Opener at Presbyterian

CLINTON, S.C. - The Coastal Carolina softball team split a Sunday doubleheader at Presbyterian College as the teams' began Big South Conference action. The Chanticleers notched a 9-4 victory in game one but fell 9-1 in the second contest.

The Chanticleers are 14-14 on the season and will close out the PC series Monday with first pitch is set for 9 a.m.

Morgan Noad led CCU in game one with a home run, three RBIs and two runs scored. Overall, Coastal tallied 13 hits in the win as all nine Chants that batted had at least one hit including two each from Noad, Bri Chiusano, Alexis Alvino and Angela Buccilli. However, the Chants only managed two hits in game two.

In game one, Coastal jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first. Chiusano started the game with a single. After stealing second, she scored on a one-out single by Noad. Kelsey Dominik followed with a double to put runners on second and third. Annie Robinson then plated Noad with an RBI single to right field.

The Blue Hose answered with four runs in the home half of the first. Morgan Longanecker drew a leadoff walk and Kelsie Sanchez singled. Hope Rogers reached on a fielder's choice to put runners on the corners. PC then had three consecutive hits -- a single by Megan Anderson, a single by Erin Ruff and a double Kylie Young -- to take a 4-2 lead.

Coastal bounced back to score two in the top of the second to tie the game at 4-4. Adrianna Toro had a leadoff double and later advanced to third on a wild pitch. Chiusano drew a one-out walk and stole second to set-up a two-run single by Taty Forbes.

The teams traded zeroes until the top of the fifth when Coastal took a 6-4 lead. Dominik walked and Alvino doubled before Kailey Mellen came through with a two-run double.

The Chants tacked on three runs in the sixth to provide the 9-4 final score. Buccilli started the frame with a single to the pitcher and Chiusano had a bunt single to third. A PC error on Chiusano's bunt moved Buccilli to third. Chiusano then stole her third base of the game before Forbes plated Buccilli with an RBI ground out. Noad capped the scoring with a two-run home run to right center field.

Dominik (9-7) pitched a complete game and struck out four to earn the win. After allowing four runs and four hits in the first inning, Dominik only allowed two hits and one walk the rest of way.

In game two, PC raced out to a 5-0 lead after two complete. Kersten Legacki hit a two-run double in the first and Rogers hit a three-run home run in the second.

Coastal got on the scoreboard in the third. Forbes drew a leadoff walk and Noad followed with an RBI double to right center field.

The Blue Hose responded with three runs in the bottom of the third. With two outs, Blaire Miller hit a two-run double. After stealing third, she scored on a single by Sanchez to give PC an 8-1 advantage.

Presbyterian closed out the game with a run in the fifth. Miller drew a leadoff walk. Ruff then reached on an error, allowing pinch runner Hailey Lawton to advance to third. Sanchez followed with an RBI double to prove the 9-1 final.

Ashley Guillette (3-4) suffered the loss as she allowed six hits and eight runs. She did record six strikeouts in 2.2 innings. Taylor Rahach finished the game in the circle, pitching 1.1 innings allowing one run and three hits.
