Alexander's Double-Overtime Goal Propels Chants to Semifinals

CONWAY, S.C. - Haley Alexander scored on a free-position shot 2:20 into double overtime to complete Coastal Carolina's come-from-behind victory over the Liberty Flames at Brooks Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

The freshman midfielder tallied two goals. Maggie Carr (one goal, two assists) had a team-high three points, Sophie Crowther notched two goals, and Madeline Bromley added a goal and an assist, as Coastal edged Liberty, 9-8 to advance to the semifinals of the Big South Championship.

Gabby Vujanic and Courtney Genovese added a goal apiece in the winning effort for Coastal, while Courtney Genovese (one goal, one assist) also contributed offensively.

With the win, Coastal improved to 11-6 overall and advances to the Big South Women's Lacrosse Championships semifinal round. Liberty, which dropped to 3-3 all-time and 0-2 this season against the Chants, wrapped its 2016 campaign with a 5-13 record.

Coastal bounced back from an 8-4 halftime deficit, as O'Leary, Genovese, Alexander, and Carr rattled off four unanswered goals in the second half to send the game to overtime.

Coastal's defense, which was led by Lauren Thomas (three caused turnovers), Nyra Constant (one caused turnover, three ground balls), and Maddy Ciardi (one draw control, one caused turnover), held Liberty scoreless for the entire second half, as well as both overtime periods.

On offense for the Flames, Kallie Britton (three goals, two assists) had a team-high five points and Katy Pridemore notched two goals.

In goal, CCU's Jenna Stover tallied a game-high 12 saves, while Aubrie Tarris and Katherine Widrick (nine saves) combined for 13 saves for Liberty.

The Chants had the advantage with 11 draw controls to 10, while Coastal also outshot the Flames 29-24.

Coastal's next game is May 5 at 4 p.m. at Winthrop. The Chants will take on the winner of No. 1 Winthrop vs. No. 8 Presbyterian in the semifinal round of the Big South Women's Lacrosse Championships.
