CONWAY - Coastal Carolina took down a fiery UMass Lowell (5-9) team, 5-3, Wednesday afternoon, to improve the Chanticleers' record to 20-5.
Coastal pitchers allowed seven hits and gave up three unearned runs while striking out 10 River Hawk batters. Taylor Rahach worked four innings and gave up two hits while striking out five to improve her record to 9-2 on the season. Ashley Guillette pitched the final 2.1 innings to get her second save of the season.
Coastal got a leadoff single by Taty Forbes (3-4), who stole second and advanced to third on Alexis Alvino's sacrifice bunt. Amanda Daneker followed with a walk and her first stolen base of the year trying to draw a throw to second. Timi Tooley then pushed Forbes across the plate on a single up the middle for the early 1-0 lead.
The second inning saw Adriana Toro lead off with a single but pinch runner Michaela McAuley was caught trying to steal second. However, Angela Buccilli (2-2), singled on a line drive to center and scored when Alvino (1-3) hit a 2-run home run for the 3-0 lead.
The Chants got a fourth run in the fourth inning when Toro led off with a single and moved to second on Buccilli's sacrifice bunt. Forbes then hit a ground ball back up the middle, driving in Toro from second to make the score 4-0 in Coastal Carolina's favor.
Devin Wallace relieved Rahach but was hampered by a Chanticleer miscue which helped load the bases. Guillette relieved Wallace to record the final out, but the River Hawks scored three times to make it a one-run game, 4-3.
Coastal picked up an insurance run in the sixth when Chelsea D'Avilar reached via a walk and moved to second when Buccilli singled to center. Forbes got her third hit with an RBI single up the middle that allowed D'Avilar to score, sliding around the tag of the UML catcher for the final tally of 5-3.
The Chanticleers will travel to Mobile, Ala., to take on Sun Belt foe South Alabama (17-7, 0-3 SBC) in their first conference road series of the year.
