Game One

Game Two

CONWAY - The Coastal Carolina softball team split a doubleheader in a mid-week showdown with former Big South foe Winthrop Tuesday afternoon. The Chanticleers won game one, 3-1, and dropped game two, 4-3.

CCU is now 25-9, while the Eagles go to 17-17 on the season.

Game 1; CCU 3 Winthrop 1

Winthrop got on the board in the first inning on single down the right field line. The Chanticleers answered in the home portion. Timi Tooley singled to left field and was able to score on a Kailey Mellen (5-7 on the day) double in left center to tie the game at 1-1.

The Chants got the eventual game-winning run in the third inning when Taty Forbes (3-4) singled and advanced to second on an Amanda Daneker walk. Alexis Alvino moved the runners into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt before Kassidy Smith walked to load the bases. Forbes scored on a wild pitch, pushing the lead to 2-1.

Coastal Carolina added its insurance run in the fourth inning. Angela Buccilli singled to right center and advanced on an Eagle wild pitch. Forbes doubled to left to score Buccilli from second.

Ashley Guillette pitched a complete game and allowed just three hits. She surrendered the one run in the first before shutting down the Eagles over the next six innings thanks to 11 strikeouts. In fact, Guillette struck out the side in the seventh to secure the win and improve her record to 9-4.

Game 2; CCU 3 Winthrop 4

Winthrop scored three runs in the first inning on two costly mistakes by CCU fielders and two Eagle hits, for the 3-0 lead.

Coastal answered with two runs in the home half of the second inning. Chelsea D'Avilar and Adriana Toro both walked and advanced into scoring position on wild pitches. Forbes brought home D'Avilar on an RBI ground out and a wild pitch allowed Toro to score and cut the CCU deficit to one, 3-2.

CCU tied it at 3-3 in the fifth. Mellen singled and later came around on a Toro RBI single to left.

The Eagles played small ball to get the final run of the game in the top of the seventh. Paige Haley singled with a high hopper to the shortstop and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Shayna Covington. A passed ball allowed Haley to move to third to set up an Ashely Westbrooks sac fly to deep left field for the game winner.

Devin Wallace scattered six hits, giving up four runs (one earned), walking two and striking out six to fall to 6-2 on the year.

The Chanticleers return home on Saturday (April 1) for a doubleheader against Sun Belt opponent ULM, first pitch scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
