CONWAY - At the Robert E. Heck Softball Complex on the campus of Georgia State University the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers will look to snap their four-game losing streak against the Panthers this weekend part of a three-game, two-day series and make a push for the Sun Belt Conference Tournament starting next month in Lafayette, Louisiana.
Coastal Carolina
The Chanticleers are looking to snap a skid of four games after taking five straight. In those four games, the Chants have been swept in a three-game series at Troy last weekend as they averaged 1.3 runs/game and most recently CCU dropped a mid-week contest to the College of Charleston as they were only able to bring home one run.
A bright spot last week came from Ashley Guillette. In two of her three games, the junior Guillette had pitched a complete game while taking a loss but not allowing any earned runs.
Guillette on Tuesday evening, the right-hander allowed just five hits while stranding eight Charleston Cougars on base.
Over the last five games offensively for Coastal Carolina, they have been led by two freshman; Taylor Sweigart and Stavi Augur. Both freshman have batting average over .300. Whle Sweigart has hit .308 (4-for-12), its Augur who has led the team with a .357 (5-for-14) batting average while collecting a pair of doubles.
Georgia State
The Panthers sit in the middle of the pack of the Sun Belt standings with an 8-9 conference record and 23-20 overall and winners of three of four. As a team, Georgia State is fourth in the conference with a .279 batting average but on the other end of the spectrum, their pitching staff is eighth with a 4.15 earned run average.
In last weekend's conference play at Appalachian State, Georgia State took all three games in a whitewashing versus the Mountaineers as they averaged ten runs per/game while putting up 32 hits. On Wednesday, it was another story for the Panthers as the Kennesaw State Owls visited Atlanta as they were able to knock off Georgia State in a mid-week game by the score of 6-3.
Ivie Drake leads the Georgia State offense this season as she is ranked in the top five of several different categories in the conference. The Owls' catcher has .408 batting average (2nd), 14 home runs (1st), 51 hits (5th), 32 runs (5th), 11 doubles (2nd), 51 RBI (1st), 108 total bases (1st), 29 walks (1st), .571 OBP (3rd), and a .864 slugging percentage (1st).
The action begins on Saturday with a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. and will wrap up on Sunday at noon EST with the series finale.
