BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Coastal Carolina got second half goals from
Saif AlHameli and
Jorge Calix in picking up a 2-0 win over Memphis in the team's opening game of the UAB Soccer for a Cure Classic.
Memphis outshot CCU 8-3 in the opening 45 minutes, but neither team was able to break into the scoring column. CCU got close in the 31
st minute when
Yazeed Matthews shot bounced off the post and the first half ended with no score.
AlHameli opened the scoring in the 67
th minute on a double assist from
Tsiki Ntsabeleng and
DZ Harmon from inside the box to give CCU a lead it would not relinquish. It was only the sixth shot of the match for CCU.
After going back and forth for the next 17 minutes, Ntsabeleng once again picked up an assist when he found Calix in the 85
th minute to give the Chants some cushion and a 2-0 lead. Calix was able to blast a shot past the Tigers goalkeeper when he came out to challenge the play.
While Memphis finished the match out shooting CCU 14-10, the Chants took four shots on goal while Memphis only had one.
Chris Datallo played in the goal for CCU picking up the first shutout of his CCU career. He had one save on the day.
The Chants have one more match in Birmingham when they will face host UAB Sunday, Sept. 2 at 2:30 p.m. Check goccusports.com for options in keeping up with Sunday's action.
