Adriaan Wildschutt Places Fifth In Southeast Regional; Moves on to Nationals

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA. – On Friday, the Coastal Carolina men's and women's cross country teams competed at the NCAA Division I Southeast Regional on the Panorama Farms cross country course at the University of Virginia. Adriaan Wildschutt was the top finisher for both teams as the sophomore placed fifth overall in the men's 10k event and now moves on the 2019 NCAA Cross Country Championships on Nov. 23 in Terre Haute, Ind.

Wildschutt finished with a personal-best time of 29:47.50 earning himself NCAA Southeast All-Region honors.

Older brother Nadeel Wildschutt also earned NCAA Southeast All-Region honors with a seventh-place finish time of 29:51.20.

The Wildschutts were on leader's heels through the first seven kilometers of the race but the top three runners including, eventual race winner Peter Seufer of Virginia Tech would pull away from away from the rest of the lead pack. Seufer crossed the finish line at 29:20.70 to earn himself the Southeast Region Runner of the Year.

Also crossing the finish line for the Coastal men were runners Andrew Southard (133rd – 32:57.0), Doug Mullen (142nd – 33:08.10), Robbie Gunia (208th – 34:53.00), and Dustin Chambers (215th – 35:04.30).

The junior Mullen broke his personal-best time in a 10k race by over a minute that was set at last year's regional event

The Coastal men finished the 10k event in the 17th overall position as the team ended the race with 475 points and had an average time of 32:07.36.

In the women's 6K race, junior Lisha van Onselen was the top Coastal Carolina harrier, as she finished with a time of 21:45.00. At the 2K split, the Amanzimtoti, South Africa native was in 88th-place, but jumped 17 spots over the final four kilometers to finish in 67th-place.

The 2019 Second Team All-Sun Belt performer finished 24:09 seconds off her 2018 Southeast Regional pace where she finished with a personal-best mark of 21:20.90.

In her first-career NCAA Southeast Regional, freshman Ashley Rulison finished 187 out of 261 runners with a time of 23:17.70.

Alyssa LeClaire competed in her final regional event of her cross country career as the senior finished in 231st with a time of 24:25.10.

Elly Hines of N.C. State won the 6k women's event with at time of 16:50.70, just a half second ahead of Gabrielle Jennings of Furman.

Coastal had only three runners compete on the day so there was no team score available.

Head Coach Sandy Fowler was proud of team's diligence and the hard work they displayed on the day.

"We had a couple of our top runners out with a sickness, so we inserted some freshman and they stepped right in and did a great job in this high-profile race," said Fowler.
