Barrett and McComb Combine for 10 Saves in Women’s Lacrosse

CONWAY – The Coastal Carolina women's lacrosse defense stepped up in a big way as it defeated former Big South opponent Campbell 16-4 on a chilly and wet Wednesday afternoon in Conway. The Chanticleers get back in the win column and improve to 2-1 while the visiting Camels (0-3) remain winless in three matches.

The goalkeeping duo of Harley Barrett, 2018 ASUN Defensive Player of the Year, and Regan McComb combined to make 10 saves while facing 18 shots and allowing just four goals.

On the offensive side of the field, Haley Alexander (4 goals and 2 assists), Samantha Courtemanche (4 goals and 2 assists), and Madeline Bromley (3 goals and 3 assists) led the offensive surge as each tallied six points.

Coastal got on the scoreboard first when Alexander, off a dish from Courtemanche, opened the scoring with 26:21 remaining in the first period for the 1-nil lead.

The visitors evened the match at 1-1 when Melissa Placek was able to slide a shot in the back of the net with five minutes elapsing from the game clock.

Courtemanche sparked the Chanticleer offense with the first of five (17:32, 15:20, 11:11, 9:02, and 5:56) unanswered goals when her scoop-shot bounded by the Camels goalkeeper. Haley Kyger followed with a free position goal after a foul in the 8-meter box. Megan Busch crashed the middle and fired a shot to beat the defense and fill the back of the net. Courtemanche scored her third point of the match by delivering a pass to the cutting Jordan Harrell (1 goal and 2 assists). Bromley closed off the scoring spurt with her unassisted goal on her drive from the wing to give the Chants a 6-1 lead.

Campbell's Placek scored her second goal of the day to pull the visitors to 6-2 on a pass from Annie Pazulski, the first of two assists.

Bromley hit Courtemanche with 3:52 remaining in the half to increase the lead to 7-2, before closing out the first half with her second unassisted goal of the day to give the home team an 8-2 halftime lead.

Alexander opened the second half scoring with 27:10 remaining in regulation off the dish from Harrell to make it 9-2 for the home team. Courtemanche and Bromley teamed up again for Courtemanche's hat-trick goal with 21:53 remaining on the game clock as the Chants continued its offensive scoring outburst.

Kyger followed up with her sixth goal of the season when Avery Drouin hit the senior crossing the middle for the 11-2 advantage. Alexander's hat-trick goal gave the Chanticleers a 10-goal lead at 12-2 and a temporary running clock at 17:59.

The Camels Mackenzie Kolesar made it 12-3 and stopped the clock from running with 1:09 expiring off the game clock.

Busch pushed the lead back to 10 at 13-3 off the free position goal with 16:18 left to play. Off a feed from Harrell minutes later, Alexander made it 14-3 with 13:09 for her final goal of the day. Courtemanche's final tally followed with 11:45 off an assist from Alexander. Bromley closed out the scoring with the third Coastal hat-trick on the day with the free position goal to extend the lead to 16-3.

Kolesar added a free position goal with 4:03 to give the final tally of 16-4.

Coastal Carolina will return to action on Wednesday, March 6 as they travel to Rock Hill, S.C. to take on Big South opponent Winthrop. The opening draw is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
