ORLANDO, FLA. - The Coastal Carolina softball team improved to 12-2 on Saturday with wins over two power five conference schools, Penn State University and Pittsburgh University. After struggling through most of game one, the Chanticleers erupted for 14 runs on 14 hits on the day.
Penn State
Penn State starter Bailey Parshall pitched 5.1 hitless innings before the Chanticleers got to the freshman. Coastal picked up three runs on three hits in the bottom half of the sixth with back-to-back hits from
Stavi Augur and
Mackenzie Beyer.
With runners on second and third, the sophomore Augur hit an 0-2 pitch into the left center gap giving Chants the lead 2-1. The next batter, freshman Beyer was able to rope a single to left field to plate Augur for the final CCU run cap off the 3-1 victory.
Chanticleers' starter
Kaitlin Beasley-Polko gave up a second inning solo homer to the Lions Ally Kurkland as it was one of two hits that sophomore would allow in her seven innings of work. The hurler also picked up five strikeouts on the day as four were inning enders.
Pitt
Katelyn Pavlick led off game two for the Panthers as she doubled off Chanticleers starter
Ashley Guillette. Pavlick then came around to score on a Marissa DeMatteo single to left to give Pitt the early advantage of 1-0.
The Chants came right back to tie it in the bottom of the first as sophomore
Taylor Sweigart tripled home
Kassidy Smith all the way from first base.
After scoring two more runs to take the lead in the second, Coastal Carolina broke the game open in the third with five runs highlighted by a Sam Sack hard hit RBI single to left field and a two-run homer by junior
Kassidy Smith who cleared the 20 plus foot center field fence.
Coastal tacked on another in the fourth, but put away the Panthers by the score of 11-3 in the fifth when sophomore center fielder
Courtney Dean picked up her first hit of Saturday's doubleheader with a double to right center. After a
Sydney Guess walk,
Stavi Augur hit a 2 RBI double to right center, scoring Dean and Guess. The game ended in the next at-bat with a walk-off RBI single by
Mackenzie Beyer.
The Panthers added runs in the third and fourth with a single from Brie Horrell and a home run by Hunter Levesque.
The senior Guillette improved to 5-1 on the season as hurler pitched her fifth complete game, adding three strikeouts.
The Chants return to action on Wednesday as they travel to play South Carolina at 6:00 p.m. in Columbia.
