Chanticleers and Gamecocks Set for Wednesday

CONWAY - After a successful weekend trip to Orlando at the UCF Tournament, the 12-2 Coastal Carolina Chanticleers return to the field tomorrow night as they travel to Columbia to face the 11-2, No. 13 ranked South Carolina Gamecocks at the Carolina Softball Stadium.

Coastal Carolina

The Chants went 3-1 last weekend with three victories over power five schools. CCU exploded for 19 runs and picked up those wins against Pittsburgh (2) and Penn State. With those efforts, Coastal Carolina has received national recognition by earning votes in the latest USA Softball Top 25 poll.

Stavi Augur had clutch hits in the three wins as she batted .364, two doubles, a triple and four runs batted in. The  sophomore outfielder helped break open game one versus Pitt on Friday with a triple to start a three-run rally in the fourth as the Chanticleers went on to win 5-0.  In the first game, the following day,  Augur was back at it when she helped spark a three run sixth inning with a lead-off double  to lift the Chants past Penn State, 3-1. In the second game of Saturday's doubleheader, Augur played a vital part of a five-run fifth inning versus Pitt as she had a two run double to help Chants to victory, 11-3.

Sophomore Kaitlin-Beasley Polko was the Community Coffee Sun Belt Pitcher of the Week as she finished the weekend with two of the team's three victories. The right-hander was brilliant in her two appearances, not surrendering a run, scattering eight hits in 12.2 innings of work.

On Saturday versus Penn State, Beasley-Polko pitched seven innings allowing just two hits. The hurler struck out five, with four ending the inning.

On the season, the CCU hurler is in the Sun Belt top five in various pitching categories; fist with a 0.88 earned run average, third in opponent batting average (.187), second in wins (7), fourth in innings pitched (48.0), and fifth in strikeouts (39).

South Carolina

The Gamecocks scored 34 runs during last weekend's Charlotte's First Pitch Classic, defeating Youngstown State, 10-1, Charlotte, 9-1, and Winthrop, 15-1.

Jana Johns was named Co-SEC Player of the Week as she batted .909 (10-for-11) with ten RBI. The Gamecock sophomore had a 1.909 slugging percentage and a .923 on-base percentage.

Johns leads the SEC in batting average this season with a .543 batting average. She is fourth-best in conference in terms of slugging percentage, has the third-best on-base percentage, and scored the seventh-most runs.

Dixie Raley and Cayla Crotar have four wins each and both Gamecock pitcher has worked 23 plus innings in the circle. With a 2.33 earned run average, Raley leads the team, as she is undefeated in seven appearances. Drotar has a 2.75 ERA and leads the team with eight appearances, 28 innings of work, and one save.

The Chanticleers and the Gamecocks have played 61 times over the years as South Carolina holds the advantage, 52-9. Coastal Carolina picked up the win in their last meeting back in 2017 as they defeated the Gamecocks in Conway, 3-2.
