Three Chants Go Deep In The 7-4 Win Versus Jacksonville

CONWAY - With light rain throughout Friday night's game versus the Jacksonville Dolphins, the Coastal Carolina softball team improved to 13-3 on the season as three Chanticleers went deep in the 7-4 win.

Coastal picked up two runs in the bottom of the first with back-to-back home runs from  sophomores Taylor Sweigart and Stavi Augur.

With two outs and freshman Sydney Guess on in  the bottom of the first, Sweigart took an Ashley Bilodeau  1-1 pitch over the the right center field fence  for her second homer of the season. Just as Sweigart sat down, Augur was able to another Bilodeau pitch into right field for her first of the year.

The Chants and Dolphins traded runs in the middle innings but then the Dolphins were able to cut the CCU lead to 5-3 in the top of the sixth as Abby Genest hit a two run homer. Next batter Kassidy Cross walked, forcing Coastal Head Coach Kelley Green to go to the bullpen for relief pitcher Kaitlin Beasley-Polko. The sophomore was able to induce a grounder back to herself to end the inning.

The Chanticleers came right back in the bottom half of the inning  as Augur led off with a walk and freshman Abbey Montoya roped a double over the center fielder Cross' out stretched arm. Two batters later sophomore Samantha Sack came through with a clutch single as the the lefty went to the opposite field, bringing home Augur for her fifth run batted in of the season. Senior Alexis Alvino picked her fourth run batted in with a perfectly executed squeeze bunt to score a sprinting Montoya from third giving the Chants a 7-3 lead.

Beasley-Polko allowed a solo homer in the seventh but picked up her second save of the season.

Senior Ashley Guillette was effective against the Dolphins going 5.2 innings, giving up five hits on three runs. The right-hander continues to move up the all-time wins ladder with her 44th career win, good for eighth.

Sophomore Courtney Dean also went 2-fo-3 for CCU with as she added her sixth homer of the season and two RBI.

The softball team returns to field on Saturday part of the second day of the Chanticleer Showdown. Coastal will be in action starting at 11:45 a.m. against UNLV and then at 2:00 p.m. versus Austin Peay.
