Chants Split Two On Day Two of Chanticleer Showdown

CONWAY – The Coastal Carolina softball team (14-4) split their two games on day two of the Chanticleer Showdown against the UNLV Runnin' Rebels and the Austin Peay Governors.

In game two, the Governors struck early, but it was the Coastal bats that propelled the team to a 6-2 victory.

Kaitlin Beasley-Polko allowed a third inning two-run home run to APSU's Danielle Liermann, but CCU's bats came alive in the bottom half of the inning as junior Kassidy Smith hit a mammoth full count home run behind the center field fence onto the batting cage roof.

In the bottom of the fourth, freshman Sydney Guess and sophomore Taylor Sweigart were able to reach on singles, but then sophomore Stavi Augur hit her second blast in as many days giving the Chanticleers a 4-2 lead.

Freshman Mackenzie Beyer hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the sixth for her first collegiate home run to put the game away for the Chants.

The sophomore Beasley-Polko retired the side in the top of the seventh to earn her eighth win of the season. The right-hander went the distance allowing seven hits, two hits and four strikeouts.

UNLV

UNLV took game one earlier in the day by the score of 10-1 in five innings. The Rebels picked up four runs on two two-run home runs in the bottom of the first inning.

Lauren Tycksen single to center field off Chanticleers starter Ashley Guillette. Two batters later Mia Trejo picked up her second home run of the season.  The next batter, Statia Cermak reached as she was hit with a Guillette errant pitch. Two batters later, Samantha Diaz connected for another Rebels homer and her second of the season.

UNLV knocked out Guillette in the top of the third as they added their third homer of the game and three more runs with a three-run shot by Justine Federe.

The Rebels tacked on three more in the top of the fifth off Coastal reliever Ally Marcano.  The junior gave up the runs with the help of doubles from Lauryn Barker and Tycksen.

Senior Alexis Alvino added her second home run of the season in solo fashion for of the two CCU hits in the game.

Coastal wraps up the Chanticleer Showdown on Sunday with a pair of games starting with the rematch versus UNLV at 11:15 a.m. to be followed up by Jacksonville at 1:15 p.m.
