Smith Walk-off Propels Chants Past Winthrop

CONWAY - The Coastal Carolina Chanticleers renewed their rivalry with former Big South opponent, the Winthrop Eagles (13-15) on Wednesday afternoon at St. John Stadium. Coastal picked up a 6-4 victory as they come from behind victory, and improved to 24-9 overall. Kassidy Smith slugged the Chants to victory as the junior had two home runs in the game including a walk-off homer in the bottom of the seventh.

With two outs in the bottom of the first, sophomore Courtney Dean sparked a two out rally as she singled off Eagle starter Madyson Watson. She then moved over to third base as sophomore Stavi Augur connected for her third home run of the year.

CCU continued the two out momentum as they picked up their third run of the bottom of the first as freshman Abbey Montoya singled and stole second to allow fellow freshman Sydney Guess to pick up her tenth run batted of the year with a single into right field.

The Eagles picked up a run in the third to make it 3-1 and then added three more in the top of the fourth to take the lead off Chanticleer starter Ashley Guillette. A one out single from Taylor Charlton led to Watson helping her own cause with an RBI single into center. Next batter, Tori Walker took a 1-0 Ashley Guillette pitch over the left field fence to put her team on top 4-3.

Sophomore Kaitlin Beasley-Polko entered the game in the fifth inning for the Chants as she plunked the first two batters of the inning. The righty then worked her way out of trouble getting by Blake Wallert to pop up and then got two outs on one play. Charlton flew out to center fielder Courtney Dean, but runner Ashley Westerbrooks, looked like she was going to score from third,  but was called out by third base umpire Alan Riggs for leaving the base too soon on the tag.

Sophomore Kassidy Smith homered in the top of the fifth to tie the score and then in the bottom of the seventh, the Collinsville, Illinois native won it for Chanticleers with her eighth home run of the season on a walk-off homer off of reliever Kiley Majette.

Beasley-Polko improved to 15-6 in her relief appearance, finishing the final three innings, not allowing a hit and adding two strikeouts.

Majette  entered in the seventh and took the loss, dropping her to 4-8.

Augur added two runs batted in on the two RBI homer in the first and Montoya added two hits in the game.

Coastal will be back in action this weekend as they returned to Sun Belt Play and take on the ULM Warhawks. Action begins on Friday at 4 p.m.
