Box Score CONWAY – The Coastal softball team (32-12) handed the UNCW Seahawks (22-22) their seventh loss in eight games by the score of 6-4 on Tuesday night at St. John Stadium.
The Chanticleers picked right up where they left off on Sunday when they defeated the Texas State Bobcats by the score of 12-2.
Junior
Kassidy Smith put the Chants up 2-0 as she hit her Sun Belt Conference tying 12th long ball of the season off Seahawk starter Haley Lenderman.
Sophomore
Courtney Dean led off the bottom of the third inning with a double off the center field fence. Dean and the next batter Smith would help make it a 4-0 game later in the inning as they both came around to score on miscues by the UNCW fielders.
In the fourth, freshman
Mackenzie Beyer put the Chanticleers up 5-0 as she hit Wilmington reliever Laurel Koontz's 3-1 pitch to dead center field for her fifth home run of the season.
The Seahawks changed the complexion of the game in the top of the fifth, as they were able to get to Chanticleer starter
Kaitlin Beasley-Polko. Camryn Dean, the sister of the Chanticleer's
Courtney Dean, hit her first career home run while two batters later, Janel Gamache hit her third home run of the year.
Beasley-Polko ran into more trouble in the top of the sixth as she walked and hit two of the first three batters. Head Coach
Kelley Green called on her senior pitcher
Ashley Guillette for relief.
However, she too was erratic in the circle, as she threw a wild pitch and consecutive walks to Seahawk batters to cut the Chanticleer lead down to one. Guillette was able to strike out Dominque Travers to end the inning and keep the score at 5-4 for her team.
CCU's Dean delivered her second hit of the night with a one-out, infield single in the bottom of the sixth. The Indian Trail, N.C., native stole second base to put herself into position to score on Smith's double into the right-center field gap.
In the seventh, Guillette allowed three Seahawks to reach base but ended the game as she induced a line out to fellow senior
Chelsea D'Avilar at third to record her second save of the season and seventh of her career.
Smith went 3-for-3 on the night with a home run, a double, three RBI, and improved her batting average to .257 on the season.
With the victory, Beasley-Polko's record improves to 21-7 as she pitched 5.1 innings, allowed four runs on five hits with nine strikeouts.
Lenderman takes the loss and drops to 8-11 on the season. The senior righty went 3.0 innings allowed four runs on five hits and three wild pitches.
The Seahawks left 12 batters on base while CCU left eight.
Coastal will set their sights on their Easter weekend series in Arlington, Texas when they travel to take on the
Mavericks in a three-game conference set beginning on Thursday. The first pitch is 6:00 p.m. ET.
