Conway, S.C. – Following a double-digit 19-3 win over Appalachian State on Thursday night, the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers had the tables turned on them on Friday as the Mountaineers scored five runs in both the first and the fifth innings to pick up a double-digit 18-6 win over the Chanticleers on Senior Night at Springs Brooks Stadium.
Prior to first pitch, the Chants honored its nine seniors in
Turner Buis,
Zach Biermann,
Matt Eardensohn,
Bobby Holmes,
Austin Kitchen,
Mike Koenig,
Cameron Pearcey,
Kieton Rivers and
Kyle Skeels.
Coastal falls to 29-23-1 overall and 14-13 in the Sun Belt with the loss, while Appalachian State improved to 22-29 and 13-15 in league play with the victory.
For the third-straight game, the Chanticleers' pitching staff tallied double-digit strikeouts with 10 on Friday night, however, the Chants also matched their season-high in walks with 11 free passes.
The offense did draw 10 walks of their own, however, they only managed seven base hits which included just one extra-base hit, a
Nick Lucky RBI double in the bottom of the eighth, and left 11 runners on base.
The defense did not help either, as the Chants recorded a season-high six errors in the loss.
The loss fell to starter
Austin Kitchen (6-4), as the left-handed pitcher struggled early by allowing five runs on five hits, one walk and one strikeout in just 1.0 inning.
App State's starter in Brandon Boone lasted just 2.1 innings. However, reliever Kaleb Bowman (6-1) came in to shut down the CCU offense with just one hit, four walks and four strikeouts over 4.2-scoreless innings.
Senior first baseman
Zach Biermann (3-for-5, 2 RBIs) drove in two RBIs on the night, while fellow senior
Kieton Rivers (0-for-2, 2 BB, SF, RBI, run) and Lucky (1-for-2, 2B, RBI) each drove in a run.
For App State, five different players had multiple hits for the game led by designated hitter Joel McDaniel (3-for-5, HR, 3 BB, 5 RBIs, 5 runs) and right fielder Phillip Cole (2-for-4, HR, BB, 4 RBIs, 2 runs, SB), while center fielder Tyler Leek (3-for-4, 2B, BB, 2 RBIs, 2 runs), catcher Riley Smith (1-for-3, HR, BB, SF, 2 RBIs, 3 runs) and Robbie Young (1-for-3, 2 RBIs) each drove in two runs apiece in the win.
Appalachian State jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the very first inning, as a lead-off single and Coastal error set the tone for the inning as the Mountaineers got a one-out RBI single and then a grand slam three batters later to go in front early.
Coastal was able to get two runs back in its first at-bat in the bottom of the first, as
Cory Wood drew a lead-off walk and then came around to score all the way from first on a
Cameron Pearcey bunt single and an App State throwing error to put the Chants on the scoreboard.
Two batters later, Rivers hit a deep fly ball to left center field for a sacrifice fly to plate Pearcey and put Coastal down three at 5-2 just one inning into the contest.
After both teams scored a run in the second to put the score at 6-3, the Chants picked up a two-run single from Biermann in the bottom of the third to trim the Mountaineers' lead down to one at 6-5.
However, the Mountaineers would score the next nine runs of the game, including a five-run fifth highlighted by a three-run home run by Cole and two more runs in the seventh on back-to-back solo home runs from McDaniel and Smith, to run out to a 15-5 lead heading into the bottom of the seventh inning.
The Chants, who went hitless over the fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh innings, got an RBI double from Lucky in the eighth, yet gave up three unearned runs in the ninth to fall by the final score of 18-6.
The two teams will return to Vrooman Field at Springs Brooks Stadium tomorrow afternoon, Saturday, May 18, for the rubber match. First pitch for the regular season finale is slated for 2 p.m. ET.
With a win in Saturday's regular-season finale, the Chants will earn the No. 6 seed in next week's 2019 Sun Belt Baseball Championship hosted by Coastal Carolina University from May 21-26 at Springs Brooks Stadium.
