Coastal Carolina’s Haley Alexander is up for the prestigious award
Conway, S.C. – Haley Alexander of the Coastal Carolina women's lacrosse team has been nominated for the 2019 NCAA Woman of the Year award. A record 585 female college athletes have been nominated by NCAA member schools for the 2019 NCAA Woman of the Year award this year.
Established in 1991, the NCAA Woman of the Year award recognizes graduating female college athletes who have exhausted their eligibility and distinguished themselves in academics, athletics, service and leadership throughout their collegiate careers.
Alexander was named the ASUN Player of the Year after a record-setting senior season in 2019. The Bel Air, Md. native, led the Chanticleers in scoring with 69 points on 51 goals and 18 assists. In 2019, she became Coastal's all-time career leader in both goals and points. Alexander picked up three ASUN Player of the Week awards for her play in 2019.
Aside from being a standout on the lacrosse field, Alexander was just as much a star in the classroom. The recent graduate held a 3.748 grade point average in biology while garnering three-straight ASUN All-Academic team honors.
Graduating cum laude with her bachelor's degree in biology in May 2019, Alexander will be attending Marymount University for nursing school in the fall.
Conferences will select up to two nominees each from the pool of school nominees. Then, the Woman of the Year selection committee, made up of representatives from the NCAA membership, will choose the top 30 honorees — 10 from each division.
The selection committee will then determine the top three honorees from each division from the top 30 and announce the nine finalists in September. From those nine finalists, the NCAA Committee on Women's Athletics then will choose the 2019 NCAA Woman of the Year.
The top 30 honorees will be celebrated and the 2019 NCAA Woman of the Year will be named at the annual award ceremony Oct. 20 in Indianapolis.
